ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Senior
Jack Neenan (Benet Academy, Naperville, Ill.) and sophomore
Jonah Snelling (Benet Academy, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) each carded a two-over 74 Friday as the Vikings placed 11th of 17 teams at the Augustana Invite at Highland Springs Golf Course. Originally scheduled as a two-day event, it was trimmed to a single round due to Saturday's forecast of day-long rain.
Neenan and Snelling tied for 23rd in the individual standings, as did junior
Hunter Love (Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.), who matched their round of 74 playing with Coach
Paul Del Vecchio's second unit.
The Vikings' first team shot a collective 305 to place 11th in a tightly-packed field. Seven teams scored between 301 and 306 to place sixth through 12th. Illinois Wesleyan's "A" group shot 282 to capture the team title by a single stroke over Wisconsin-Eau Claire. A second Titan outfit carded a third-place, even-par 288 and another Eau Claire bunch was fourth with a 294.
Rounding out Del Vecchio's "A" squad were senior
Dylan Flock (Maroa-Forsyth HS, Forsyth, Ill.), with a 78; sophomore
Tyler Langel (West Delaware HS, Manchester, Iowa), with a 79; and freshman
Dan Ford (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.), who carded an 84.
UW-Eau Claire's Corey Boerner claimed medalist honors with a four-under 68, one stroke ahead of Wheaton's David Morton, and Will Nummy and Rob Wuethrich of Illinois Wesleyan, all of whom shot 69. Four players shot 70 to tie for fifth in a field of 89 golfers.
One of three St. Ambrose teams shot 298 to finish fifth. The rest of the top 10 consisted of Luther (301), Clarke (302), North Park (302), a second swarm of Bees (303) and Wheaton (304). The Vikings finished 11th, one stroke ahead of UW-Stout.
Led by Love, Augustana's "B" outfit shot 327 to tie for 16th place.
