Tony Willaert's Augustana wrestling squad continued on its roll Friday, defeating Milwaukee School of Engineering, Wheaton and the hosts at the Carthage Duals. The Vikings extended their win streak to six and improved to 6-2 on the season heading into the CCIW Championships at Carver Center on Saturday, February 13.
AUGUSTANA 30, MSOE 18
Augustana took advantage of a forfeit win at 125,
Trevor Boryla's (Sycamore HS, Sycamore, Ill.) 11-8 decision over Charlie Gruen at 133 and
Benjamin Gruenstein's (Eden Prairie HS, Eden Prairie, Minn.) pin (1:24) of Gianni Rago at 141 to jump in front 15-0.
Angel Cruz (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.),
Frankie Faasen (Manasquan HS, Lake Como, N.J.) and
Neil O'Shaughnessy (Niles West HS, Niles, Ill.) recorded victories at 157 through 174 to extend the margin to 24-6. Cruz edged Caleb Brick 7-6, O'Shaughnessy downed Hunter Huddleston 5-2 and Faasen scored a 4-2 sudden victory over Grayson Vandenbush.
The Raiders logged back-to-back falls at 184 and 197, but forfeited at 285 to account for the final.
AUGUSTANA 34, WHEATON 18
The Vikings started fast again against the Thunder, going up 16-0.
Ellex Williams (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) took 3:05 to pin Giovany Armira at 125. Boryla followed with an 18-6 major decision over Josiah Krason at 133 and freshman
Nic Minnito (Plainfield Central HS, Lockport, Ill.) won by fall at 7:08 of his 141-pound match with Ethan Harsted.
Angel Cruz, another freshman, won by fall (2:21) over Charles Owens at 157 to give Augustana a 22-6 advantage and senior
Josh Bush (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) clinched the team win with a pin of Natan Jara (6:15) at 184.
Daniel Skold (St. Francis HS, Plainfield, Ill.) added another win by fall over Isaiah Causey (2:49) at 285.
AUGUSTANA 52, CARTHAGE 3
Willaert's outfit recorded six pins, a major decision and a pair of forfeit victories in downing host Carthage. The Kenosha school resurrected its program this year under Head Coach Alberto Quiros, a former Augustana standout.
Winning by fall for the Vikings were Williams at 125, Minnito at 141,
Chase Clark (Oregon HS, Mount Morris, Ill.) at 157, freshman A.J. Joyner
(Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) at 165, Faasen at 174 and Skold, who improved to a team-best 7-1 on the season with a pin at 285.
Alex Cruz (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) added a 17-4 major decision over Reese Britton at 149.
