Vikings finish season winners of six of final nine; Doak named team MVP and lands in top five in program history with 2,403 career assists
Â
The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team ended the 2021 season on a high note, winning six of their final nine matches as they young squad concluded the year with an 11-21 record, 2-6 in the CCIW.
Â
The season featured some outstanding individual performances. Senior setter
Olivia Doak ended her 2021 campaign with a total of 631 assists and rounds out her career at Augie with 2,403, good for fifth most for a career in program history. She was voted the team MVP for the 2021 season, her second team MVP in a row, and placed eighth in the CCIW in assists per set and fifth in total assists. In addition to her on-the-court accomplishments, Doak was recently named to the CoSIDA Academic All-Region team and will be eligible for Academic All-American voting to take place in December.
Â
Sophomore defensive specialist
Grace Vranicar led the CCIW in digs per set throughout conference play with an average of 4.93. She played in all 32 matches for the Vikings this season and made an appearance in 116 of the team's 118 sets played. She finished the year with a receiving percentage of .944 and cracked triple-digits in assists with 101. Vranciar was also named to the all-tournament team in the early-season outing in California and ended 2021 with eight matches with 20-plus digs, including 33 in a come-from-behind 3-2 victory against Dubuque on October 15. She tallied double-digit digs in 30 of 32 contests played this year. The sophomore was named Second Team All-Conference this year for her efforts.
Sophomore
Emily Schipper was the team leader in kills this season with a total of 342, ranking her fifth in the CCIW. Schipper also earned all-tournament honors in a non-conference home tournament earlier in the year at the Viking Classic, as well as the home Pumpkin Bash. She finished second on the team in blocks in 2021. Teammate
Ja'Nya Davis led the Vikings with 62 total blocks and was eighth in the conference in blocks per set.
Four-year letter winner
Lexis Miller finished fourth on the team in 2021 in sets played, second among hitters, and posted a career-high 13 kills against John Carroll on October 1. She ended her senior campaign fourth on the team in both kills and hitting percentage and closes the book on her Augie tenure with 79 matches played.
The Vikings played in a total of seven five-set matches this season, their most since the 2015 season. Five losses came in five sets this year, but perhaps their biggest win also came in five when they erased a 2-0 deficit to defeat Dubuque in mid-October. The victory over the Spartans was the first of their 6-3 record to close out the year.
