Swimming & Diving teams improve to 2-0 with wins over Illinois Wesleyan

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's and men's swimming & diving teams each improved to 2-0 on Saturday following wins over conference opponent Illinois Wesleyan. The women earned a close 140-134 victory, while the men defeated the Titans by a score of 150-128.

Freshmen Zoe Heiar and Brooke Walker tied for the most individual points scored during the meet. Both won an event and took second in their other. Walker came in first in the 500-yard freestyle and second in the 1,000, whole Heiar won the 100-yard breast with a time of 1:11.03. She took second in the 100-yard butterfly as well. 

The Vikings A medley relay were out-touched by .03 taking second. Aviana Zahara, Madelynn Marunde, Dominique Valentine, and Isabelle Seten went for a time of 1:52.67. The B relay took third with a mark of 1:53.45.

The Vikings won a total of six events, including the 200-freestyle relay. Outside of Heiar and Walker, Hailey Glasnovich in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.29) and Zahara in the 50-yard freestyle (25.11) were both winners in their respective swimming events. Emily Miskta won the 1 meter diving event, scoring 176.40. Senior Amy Nicholson took second at 160.20. The divers were crucial to the Vikings' victory as the Titans had none. The Vikings divers scored 13 points total.

Perhaps the most crucial event of the meet was the women's 200 freestyle relay. Before the relay, the Titans had a 3 point lead over the Vikings. The relay team consisted of Zahara, Seten, Megan Frost, and Micaela Koeppen as they picked up first to help lead the Vikings to victory.

The Vikings now lead the all-time series against the Titans 9-4.

On the men's side, freshman Kacper Cebula scored the most points after winning three events and scoring 27 points individually for the Vikings.

Starting off the meet, both of the men's medley relays beat the Titans A relays. The A relay which consisted of Cebula, Aidan McConkey, Isaiah Valentine and Joshua Valentine won the first event of the meet with a time of 1:40.76. The Vikings B relay finished second at 1:41.84. 

Men's individual event winners include Cebula in the 100-yard backstroke (54.91), 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.66), and 200 IM 2:02.06. Freshman Nathan Mesina won the 100-yard break with a time of 1:05.11. The men's A relay finished strong winning their event with a mark of 1:30.86.

Both the men and women improve to 2-0 with the victories.

"I am so proud of our entire team as each swimmer did their job in stepping up in each race and coming together for this victory," said head coach Dan Lloyd. "The strength of our program showed today as it has always been about the relationships, standing beside each other and supporting each other. We showed great heart today and it is a true honor to coach this team."

Both teams are back in action on November 20 for a two-day meet at the Coe Invitational in Cedar Rapids.
