Box Score 2 NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Augustana Vikings men's water polo team earned a fifth-place finish at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) DIII East Championships this weekend, picking up two wins on Sunday over the Connecticut College Camels and Penn State Behrend Lions.
The Vikings and Camels had the first game of the day following Saturday's results. After a slow start from both teams that saw a 2-2 tie after one quarter of play, Augie took control in the second to bring a 7-4 lead into halftime. The Vikings did not lose a quarter the entire game, winning 3-1 in the third to bump their margin up to five entering the final period. Another plus-advantage in the fourth allowed them to hold onto their lead and bring a 14-8 final score to the finish line.
James Sutton and
Joseph Addison both had three goals for the Vikings.
In the fifth place game, the Vikings faced off with the Lions of Penn State Behrend for the third time this season, with this one proving to be the closest contest between the two. A low-scoring affair compared to their prior meetings, Augustana saw their highest scoring output of the game in the first, doubling up PSB 4-2 after eight minutes of action. The Vikings held a slight advantage in the second quarter alone to go into halftime with a 7-4 lead for the second straight game.
The Lions inched closer in the third with a plus-one margin, but an evenly-played period in the fourth kept Augie out in front, taking the game by a final score of 12-10.
Colin McDowell and
Lucas Osborn accounted for half of the Vikings' goals in game two, scoring three each.
With the wins, Augustana improves to 4-11 on the season and secures a fifth-place finish out east. The Vikings placed ahead of both teams they defeated on Sunday. Johns Hopkins was crowned the winner after defeating MIT in the title match.
Addison was named to the All-Tournament Team for Augie.
The Vikings will play once more this season on Saturday, November 13 when they host McKendree for the first-ever home water polo match inside the Anne Greve Lund Natatorium. Start time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
