ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's and women's swimming team picked up a win over the visiting Monmouth Fighting Scots on Saturday as they concluded am historic first meet inside the Anne Greve Lund Natatorium. The Augustana women earned a 187-18 win over Monmouth, while the men were victorious with a final score of 179-24. Saturday's dual meet did not feature diving events.
Coach Dan Lloyd's Vikings won 11 of 11 events—including both relays—with freshman Brooke Walker as the top point scorer of the meet. Â
Lloyd's bunch swept the top three places in the 1,000-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle, 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard free, 200-yard individual medley, 100-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle, and 100-yard breaststroke. Nine first years made their debut at this meet.
Walker swam a winning 11:05.81s 1,000-yard freestyle and a 5:29.57s 500-yard freestyle.
"I felt really nervous going into this meet, but my support system really got me through this," Walker said.
The first event of the meet was the 200 medley relay. The Viking team comprised of Megan Frost, Emily Martin, Lauren Raike, and Zoe Heiar won the first event at the new pool with a 1:56.78 time. The first individual event of the meet was the 1000 freestyle where walker claimed first. Freshman Bella Casanovas followed up with second with a time of 11:17.03. Sophomore Olivia White claimed third with an 11:27.29.Â
The second event of the meet was the 200-yard freestyle. Junior Maddie McFarland took first with a mark of 2:06.58. Dominique Valentine finished with a close second at 2:06.62. Senior co-captain Madelynn Marunde took third with a 2:07.17 finish.Â
Additional notable event winners featured Aviana Zahara in the 50 free, Raike and Martin in the 200 IM, Zoe Heiar in the 100 butterfly, Isabelle Sansom in the 100 freestyle, Hailey Glasnovich in the 100 backstroke, and Marunde in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:10.61.
On the men's side, it was a record point margin for the Vikings as they won 11 of 11 events and both relays. Gavin McCorry was the top point scorer during his collegiate debut. A total of 18 members made their debut at this meet. McCorry swam a winning time of 10:49.62 in the 1,000-yard freestyle and a 5:11.23 mark in the 500-yard freestyle.
"I went in with a positive and relaxed mindset," McCorry said. "I was happy with my results"Â
The first event of the meet was the 200-yard medley relay, which resulted in a tie at the top. The first-team group of Aidan McConkey, Kacper Cebula, Isaiah Valentine, and Josh Valentine and second-team bunch of Nick Phillips, Tommy Anderson, Jack Brandt, and Terrin Boehmer both finished with a final time of 1:40.29.
Other notable event winners featured Cebula in 200 freestyle, Boehmer in the 200 IM, Valentine in the 100 butterfly, and Phillips in the 100 backstroke. Cebula also earned the win in the 100 breaststroke. Albert Buvary and Terrin Buvary tied for first in the 100 freestyle with a 49.79 time.
The men's 50 freestyle race was a close one it went to freshman Max Rybchuk with a 22.23 mark, out-touching second by .02.
"Today was a historic day for our program as we officially opened our new home," said Coach Lloyd. "I could not be more proud of our team and how they have always represented the commitment to excellence that our program stands for. Today's victory in opening the Anne Greve Lund Natatorium was a tribute to all the alumni who built the lasting legacy of our program."
The Vikings will be back in action on November 6 at Anne Greve Lund Natatorium against when they host Illinois Wesleyan at 1:00 p.m.
