Box Score 2 NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Augustana Vikings men's water polo team took on day one of the CWPA Division III East Championships on Saturday, falling to the No. 8 ranked MIT Engineers by a score of 17-9 before being defeated by the Washington & Jefferson Presidents in game two by a final of 13-12.
The Vikings (2-11) earned the No. 5 seed in the tournament and took on top-seeded MIT (7-10) in game one. The Engineers started things off with an early 4-1 advantage after a quarter of play, eventually stretching their margin to 7-3 at halftime. The No. 8 ranked team saw their biggest quarter in the third to help pull away and despite an evenly-played final frame, the score was oo much to overcome for the Vikings as the Engineers took the first contest of the weekend 17-9.
Colin McDowell had three goals to lead Augustana.
In the second match of the day, the Vikings faced a familiar foe in the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson, who they have seen twice already leading up to this meeting. In their prior two contests, the Presidents won both a combined margin of three points and this outing was no different as they squeaked by Augustana with another one-point win.Â
Following a 3-1 first quarter for W&J, Augie responded with a big second to tie the game at 6-6 at intermission. The Presidents regained their two-point cushion after the third and were able to hold off the Vikings down the stretch. Augustana got within one goal with under ten seconds remaining, but could not get another scoring opportunity as time ran out.Â
Joseph Addison posted a team-high four goals in game two for Augie.
Augustana will be back in action on Sunday for two more games. First, the Vikings will take on host school Connecticut College at 8:00 a.m. CST before taking on the Penn State Behrend Lions in the fifth place game at 10:40 a.m. CST. The Vikings are 2-0 against the Lions this season.Â
