Augie women’s volleyball captures win at Elmhurst Invitational

Emily Schipper shines as Vikings go 1-2 at two-day event

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Augustana women's volleyball team (5-13, 0-2) competed at the Elmhurst Invitational this weekend with three games over two days. On Friday night, the Vikings played matches against Kalamazoo and John Carroll and finished the weekend with a single match on Saturday versus UW-River Falls.

The Vikings captured their first and only win of the road trip on Friday night against Kalamazoo. Augustana lost the first set to the Hornets but rolled in the next three by scores of 25-18, 25-18, and 25-15.

Emily Schipper led the Viking offense with 17 kills, followed by Brook Fieldman with 13. Fieldman and Schipper also had team-highs in digs with 15 and 14, respectively. Olivia Doak continued her stellar distribution with 26 assists to lead Augie. Doak also contributed on the serving line with five aces.

The Vikings kept their momentum from game one into the first set of Friday night's second contest. Augustana defeated John Carroll 25-21 in the first set but could not continue the magic and dropped the next three to lose 3-1.

Schipper again led the Vikings in kills with 14. Fieldman posted another 13 kills while Lexis Miller did the same. Schipper also led Augie in digs against JCU with 12 followed by 11 from both Grace Vranicar and Fieldman. Doak provided another 22 assists while Annalise Peterson made 21.

To close the weekend, Augustana gave UW-River Falls all the Falcons could handle but fell in a competitive five-set match.

Schipper continued her dominance as she killed another dozen hits. Miller reached double-digit kills in game three as well with 10. Fieldman had the most digs on the team with 16 as Vranicar added 12 and Doak 11. Doak also made 24 assists in the final match of the invite.

"We improved in many ways and many players played the best they have this year even though we went 1-2, said head coach Kelly Bethke "It was a successful weekend in many ways."

Augustana will be back home for their next match as the North Park Vikings will visit Rock Island on Wednesday, Sept. 6.
