Men's water polo concludes final day at Gary Troyer Tournament

The Vikings dropped their final two contests in California on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA VERNE, Calif. -- The Augustana men's water polo team finished off their stay at the Gary Troyer Tournament in California on Sunday, falling to NCAA Division I opponent California Baptist 24-3 before dropping a close one to the Westcliff Warriors by a final of 12-9.

The Vikings had their best quarter against the Lancers of California Baptist in the opening frame as they scored two of their three goals to begin the game and keep them within striking distance after the opponent pushed across seven for the early lead. The Lancers followed things up in the second with their best period, scoring eight goals while holding the Vikings to none. Cal Baptist led 14-2 at halftime. 

Augie grabbed their third goal of the game in the third but the Lancers continued to see success on their offensive attacks as they improved their margin by five after three periods complete. California Baptist posted a 3-0 advantage in the final quarter to close out the game with a 24-3 victory. The Lancers converted 24 of their 34 shot attempts into goals.

Three different Vikings players tallied a goal in game one as Zander O'Dwyer, Zion Thomas, and James Sutton all put one into the net. Henry Sothern had five saves in net for Augie.

The second contest of the day was a much closer affair against the Warriors of Westcliff. The Warriors started off the first quarter with a small advantage of 4-2 after eight minutes of action, adding onto their margin through the second quarter with a another quarter victory at 3-2. Westcliff led Augustana 7-4 at the halftime break. In the third, the Warriors and Vikings battled neck-and-neck, but again Westcliff added slightly onto their lead with a one-goal advantage. Heading into the fourth, the Vikings trailed 10-6.

Augie kept the game close as the game wound down, eventually winning the final eight minutes of action by one goal. The team posted a plus-one margin in the fourth, but it was not enough as the Warriors held on to their three-goal victory at 12-9. 

Joseph Addison led the Vikings with five goals on seven shots in game number two of the day. Colin McDowell also snagged multiple scores with two.

With the results from Saturday, the Vikings drop to 1-6 on the season. The team will be back in action on Saturday, October 9th when they take on McKendree and Salem in Lebanon, Ill.
