BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) has announced the bracket for the NCAA DIII championships to take place beginning Saturday, October 23. The Augustana Vikings will compete in the eastern schedule and have earned the No. 5 seed in the upcoming tournament.
Augustana will play the No. 1 seeded Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineers, who are currently ranked No. 8 in the country at the DIII level. The two teams were scheduled to face off earlier this year, but issues at host-school Connecticut College caused the weekend of competition to be canceled. The Engineers currently sit 5-10 on the season, but have played a high number of NCAA DI opponents on their schedule this year. They are currently 1-0 against teams in the eastern region bracket as they defeated Austin 16-11 back in early September. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Vikings and Engineers. It is slated for 11:00 a.m. CST.
In the Vikings' second scheduled game of the weekend, they will face a familiar foe in the Washington & Jefferson Presidents, who they have played twice this season. Both games went in favor of the Presidents, with a combined margin of victory of just three points in two contests. In their first meeting, Washington & Jefferson converted a goal with just two seconds remaining to squeak out a 16-15 victory. Last Saturday, the Presidents defeated the Vikings 12-10. The game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. CST.
Following the results on Saturday, the teams will compete on Sunday dependent on how they fared in their previous two matchups. The championship and third-place games will be decided after Saturday's games, while places 5-7 will enter a round-robin on Sunday to determine the final outcome.
