ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's tennis team was defeated at home on Saturday in their final CCIW match of the regular season, falling to the visiting Millikin Big Blue by a score of 8-1 from the Lower Campus Courts at Augustana.
The Big Blue got off to a fast start following three wins in doubles. The visitors saw two 8-3 wins at the No. 2 and 3 spots, followed by a tough 8-6 triumph over Augustana's
Lily Schoeck and
Caitlyn Hanulikova in the top spot. Millikin led 3-0 heading into singles.
The two teams saw several competitive matches in singles, with two of them going to a third set. The Big Blue started things off with two quick victories at No. 5 and 6 to clinch the match win, but the remainder of the contests had more of a back-and-forth feel to them.
Lauren Oda forced a tiebreaker in the first set at the fourth position, but came up short and eventually dropped her match in consecutive sets. Both matches in the No. 1 and 2 spots went to a third and deciding set after each of the Millikin players bounced back from a set one defeat to Schoeck and
Michaela Magee to win their respective battles.
Hanulikova secured the lone win in the Vikings, defeating her counterpart at No. 3 singles by a score of 6-3, 6-4. She improves her singles record to 8-1 on the season.
With the loss, Augustana drops to 4-5 overall and 4-4 in the CCIW. The team will await the official pairings in the upcoming conference tournament to begin on Thursday, October 21.
