Box Score 2 O'FALLON, Ill. – The Augustana men's water polo team competed in a pair of games on Saturday at the McKendree Tournament, falling to the host school McKendree Bearcats by a score of 16-4 before dropping their second game of the day to the Salem Tigers with a final of 18-12.
In the first game of the day, the Bearcats defense held the Vikings in check in the opening half, preventing them from getting in the scoring column as they took a 9-0 lead into halftime. The Vikings finally got on the board in the third with the first score of the new period, eventually taking a slight 2-1 advantage in the third quarter alone before the Bearcats grabbed two late goals to push their lead to 12-2 heading into the final frame. McKendree posted another 4-2 margin in the fourth on their way to a 16-4 triumph.
Joseph Addison led the Vikings with two goals on a team-high seven shots.
Colin McDowell and
Zion Thomas also added a score for Augie. The team tallied three saves in net between three goalies.
Maximus Mees had six stops.
Against the Tigers, the Vikings saw a more efficient showing on offense, especially in the first quarter as they lead 5-4 after eight minutes of action. Addison scored four of his six goals in the opening frame. Salem bounced back with a shutout in the second quarter, adding five to their total to take a 9-5 lead at the halftime break.
The second quarter proved to be the main difference maker as the two teams saw an evenly-played second half. Both the Vikings and Tigers tallied four goals apiece in the third quarter. Augie saw scores from four different players in the period.
Salem posted a slight advantage in the fourth to stretch the margin to six at 18-12. The Vikings continued to see success on offense, once again getting each of their goals from three different players. For the game, Augustana had seven different players score at least once. The 12 goals scored are the most they have put up since their second game of the season where they tallied 15 against Washington & Jefferson.
With the defeats, the Vikings drop to 1-8 on the season. The team will be back in action on Saturday, October 16th when they head to Washington, Pa. to take on Washington & Jefferson and Penn State-Behrend. Start times are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m CST.
