Box Score 2 CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Augustana men's water polo team battled tough against two nationally ranked teams in the opening day of the Gary Troyer Tournament on Friday, falling to the No. 6 ranked Chapman Panthers by a score of 17-8 before dropping a contest to the No. 2 ranked Cal Lutheran Kingsmen by a final of 14-8.
In game one of the day against Chapman, the Vikings fell behind early as a strong first period from the Panthers put them up 6-1 to begin the game. The Chapman defense continued to hold strong, allowing just one Augustana goal in the next eight minutes of action, but the Vikings were able to secure a shutout in the second quarter to inch closer before halftime. The Panthers led 6-2 at the break.
Joseph Addison had the first score of the game for the Vikings, while
Lucas Osborn add on to the Augustana total before halftime.
It was a much more productive half for Augie in the third and fourth quarters, pushing four goals into the net in the third. Despite it being the Vikings' best offensive period, it also was for the Panthers as they grabbed seven goals to stretch their lead out to 13-5 after three complete. Three different Vikings found the back of the net following halftime, with
Colin McDowell scoring twice in the third alone. Addison also grabbed his second score of the game, while
Zion Thomas had the other for the Vikings. Chapman went on to win the fourth quarter 4-2 to close out the game with a 17-8 final score. McDowell finished the contest with four goals scored to lead the Vikings on seven shots after adding two more in the final period of play.
The Vikings then followed up their game with the sixth-ranked team in NCAA DIII with the second-ranked team in Cal Lutheran. The Kingsmen jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the first period, following things up with a 4-1 margin in the second to make it 9-3 at halftime.
Augustana posted plenty of opportunities throughout the contest as they finished with more shot attempt than Cal Lutheran. The Vikings shrunk the deficit in the third quarter following a 3-1 differential in their favor, entering the final period of play trailing 10-6. The Kingsmen answered by doubling up the Vikings in the fourth period to take the game by a score of 14-8. Augustana ended the game with 32 total shots.
McDowell had a similar showing in game number two, again scoring four goals for the Vikings on seven shot attempts. Osborn was the other member of the team with more than one score finishing with two on three attempts.
Harris Dibek had six saves in net for Augie.
With the losses, Augustana drops to 1-4 on the season. The team will be back in action with two more games on Saturday as they take on California Baptist at 11:00 a.m. CST, followed by Westcliff at 2:45 p.m. CST.
