Vikings go 2-0 at North Central Duals

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Bonus-point wins at 197 and 285 pounds Saturday lifted Augustana to a 22-21 victory over Concordia (Wis.) at the North Central Duals. Coach Tony Willaert's Vikings downed Lakeland 54-0 later in the day to move to 3-2 on the season. On Friday, February 5, Augustana is scheduled to wrestle four duals in Kenosha, Wisconsin. On the docket for the Vikings are host Carthage, Milwaukee School of Engineering, North Central and Wheaton.
 
AUGUSTANA 22, CONCORDIA (Wis.) 21
 
Trailing Concordia 21-13 after consecutive losses at 165, 174 and 184 pounds, Augustana got a big 18-1 technical fall by senior Frankie Faasen (Manasquan HS, Lake Como, N.J.) over the Falcons' Noah Hardy at 197 to trim the deficit to 21-18. Faasen normally wrestles at 174 pounds.
 
In the 285-pound match, sophomore Daniel Skold (St. Francis HS, Plainfield, Ill.) came through with a 9-0 major decision over Reid McNeill. On the heels of Faasen's five-point win, Skold's four were just enough to give the Vikings a 22-21 victory.
 
Other wins for Willaert's bunch came from sophomore 133-pounder Trevor Boryla (Sycamore HS, Sycamore, Ill.), a 16-6 major decision over Gabe Rodriguez; freshman Angel Cruz (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.), 5-1 over Quinn Hoopman at 158 and junior Ellex Williams (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.), who was awarded a forfeit at 125.

Augustana cruised past Lakeland. The Muskies forfeited at five weight classes and the Vikings scored bonus points in four of the five matches that were contested.
 
Skold and freshman A.J. Joyner (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) each won by fall. Skold dispatched Garret Hunt in 4:41 at 285 and Joyner took 3:50 to pin David Aragon at 165.
 
Sophomore Alex Cruz (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) scored a 17-0 technical fall over Chris Jarka at 149 and classmate Dylan Messer (Dixon HS, Dixon, Ill.) logged a 9-1 major decision over Matthew Crowley at 184. At 141 pounds, junior Benjamin Gruenstein (Eden Prairie HS, Eden Prairie, Minn.) earned a 5-3 sudden victory over Tyler Salvino.
