Mike Zapolski, director of athletics at Augustana since 2008, will be serving as the chair of the NCAA Division III men's volleyball committee for 2020-21.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Mike Zapolski, director of athletics at Augustana, was named the chair of the NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Committee, it was announced recently. Zapolski joined the committee in time for the 2018-19 school year and this is his third year on the committee. His tenure began on September 1, 2018 and he will serve through the summer of 2022.
As a member of the volleyball committee, he has had a part in the selection process for the NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball National Tournament and had a role in the running of the tournament.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to serve on four different sports committees, and am honored to be chosen to serve as chair of the NCAA Division III men's volleyball committee for the upcoming 2020-21 academic year," said Zapolski. "Committee service has been extremely rewarding both personally and professionally as it provides a unique chance to network with administrators and coaches throughout the country along with NCAA staff in Indianapolis."
This is the fourth different NCAA Committee for Zapolski as his other stints were with men's basketball, men's tennis and women's soccer. He served as a member of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Committee from 2007-10, the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Committee from 2011-14 and the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Committee from 2014-17. He was the chair of both the Men's Tennis (three years from 2011-13) and the Women's Soccer Committees in his final year of service (2016).
Zapolski began his tenure as the director of athletics at Augustana on June 1, 2008 and since that time Viking teams have won a total of 27 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin team championships. There have been 29 NCAA Division III tournament/playoff appearances by Augustana teams during Zapolski's time as director of athletics. In addition, 129 Vikings have earned NCAA Division III All-American honors and 50 student-athletes have been named to the Academic All-America team. The NCAA has awarded 20 postgraduate scholarships to Augustana athletes while Zapolski has been in charge of the athletics program.
