Vikings go 7-1 in dual meets; finish fourth at CCIW Championships; capture conference titles in two events; 11 school records broken

Coach Dan Lloyd's 2019-20 Augustana women posted a 7-1 record in dual meets—the program's best in 24 years—and repeated last year's fourth-place finish at the CCIW Championships. The Vikings claimed one individual and one relay title at the conference meet and set a total of 11 new school records on the season.

Augustana captured five straight dual meets to start the season. The Vikings won 127-109 at St. Ambrose on October 4, defeated Knox (165-41) and Millikin (128-84) at home on October 26 and Loras (155-54) and Knox (172-53) in Dubuque, Iowa on November 9. They ran their record to 5-0 with a 150-55 win at Monmouth on November 22.

Aviana Zahara (Pleasant Valley HS, Moline, Ill.) won the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke as Augustana place third of four teams at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational on November 23.

On December 6-7, Lloyd's crew competed at the Wheaton Invitational, finishing seventh in a strong field, which included Division I Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Sophomore Lauren Raike (Alamo Heights HS, San Antonio, Texas) took down Julie Konchan's 1988 school record in the 100 individual medley at the Grinnell Invitational on January 17. Raike's fourth-place 1:03.40 bettered Konchan's previous standard by 34 one-hundredths of a second. Zahara won the 100 backstroke at Grinnell and sophomore Madelynn Marunde (Belvidere North HS, Belvidere, Ill.), freshman Dominique Valentine (Walnut Hills HS, Cincinnati, Ohio), sophomore Alicia Garcia (Seminole HS, Lake Mary, Fla.) and freshman Maddie McFarland (Barrington HS, Tower Lakes, Ill.) claimed the 800 freestyle relay. The Vikings placed third in a nine-team field.

Wheaton handed Augustana its lone loss of the season in a double dual with the Thunder and North Central on February 8. The Vikings fell 176-91 to the hosts, but defeated the Cardinals 194-27 to go to 7-1 on the year—the program's best dual-meet record since a 7-1 ledger in 1995-96. The last time Augustana posted a better mark was in 1993-94 (10-1).

At the CCIW Championships in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin on February 20-22, the Vikings equaled their fourth-place finish from 2019 and set 10 school records. Marunde swam a 17:48.00 to repeat as 1650 freestyle champion and Lloyd's 200 medley relay won for the second straight year as well. Zahara, Marunde, senior Gabrielle Ainsworth (Hononegah HS, South Beloit, Ill.) and sophomore Isabelle Seten (Centennial HS, Champaign, Ill.) swam a school-record 1:45.97.

The oldest record to fall was Konchan's 1987 50 breaststroke time of :31.78. Marunde broke it with a :31.27 on the first leg of the 100 breaststroke final, where her time of 1:06.31 also set a school mark. She placed third to earn all-conference honors. For good measure, Marunde took down Raike's school record in the 200 breaststroke as well, swimming a 2:25.52 in the prelims.

Zahara set individual school records in the 100 freestyle (:52.30), 50 backstroke (:26.20) and 100 backstroke (:56.94) and earned all-conference recognition in the 100 back (2nd) and 50 and 100 freestyles (3rd in both).

Ainsworth swam a sixth-place :58.71 to break her own mark in the 100 butterfly.

The Vikings also set new school records in the 400 freestyle and medley relays, both of which placed second. The freestyle quartet of Zahara, Ainsworth, Raike and Seten swam a 3:32.06 and the medley unit of Zahara, Marunde, Ainsworth and Seten finished in 3:54.45.
