Leap Day sweep for Vikings

Sophomore Leonardo Panosso won both of his singles and doubles
matches on Saturday, as Augustana defeated St. Ambrose 9-0 and
Luther 7-2 at the Quad City Tennis Club.

MOLINE, Ill.—Augustana celebrated Leap Day Saturday with a pair of dual-meet wins over St. Ambrose and Luther at the Quad City Tennis Club. The Vikings downed the Bees 9-0 and the Norse by a score of 7-2 to move to 7-2 on the season. Coach Jon Miedema's squad will be in action next against Edgewood in Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday, March 7.

Miedema juggled his lineup versus St. Ambrose, with his three doubles combos all playing their first matches of the year together. Freshman Vinicius Lopes (Rondonopolis, Brazil) and senior Ryan Sullivan (The Gow School, Winnetka, Ill.) scored an 8-0 victory over Michael Lai and Daniel Reinoso at number three. Junior Peter Alex (Hinsdale South HS, Darien, Ill.) and sophomore Kyle Boudreau (Antioch HS, Antioch, Ill.) were 8-1 winners over Jack Schieferdecker and Matt Zuccato at number one and sophomores and Leonardo Panosso (La Sale Caxias, Caxias do Sul, Brazil) and Justin Cassens (Emerald Ridge HS, Puyallup, Wash.) finished off the doubles sweep, downing Jose Anchundia and Gonzalo Pereira 8-3 at number three.
 
Augustana shook up its singles lineup as well. Alex moved up a spot from his usual second slot and defeated Schieferdecker 6-1, 6-0 at number one.
 
Panosso, Cassens and Boudreau each bumped up two spots from their customary positions. Panosso bested Anchundia one and one at second singles. Cassens won 6-3, 6-2 over Zuccato at number three and at fourth singles, Boudreau downed Pereira 6-0, 6-1.
 
Lopes was a love, love winner over Reinoso at number five and Sullivan won 6-0, 6-1 over Lai at number six.
 
AUGUSTANA 7, LUTHER 2
 
Miedema trotted out his usual crew against Luther to win two of three doubles matches and five of six in singles action.
 
Junior Caio de Rezende (Colegio Itoca, Sao Paulo, Brazil) and junior Alvaro Leal (Maristas Valencia, Valencia, Spain) got things started with an 8-1 third-doubles victory over Brook Norwood and Charlie Weill and Panosso teamed with Boudreau for an 8-4 win over Ryan Ortega and Sakchham Karki at number two. Alex and junior Sriram Sugumaran (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) were edged 8-7 by Cole Schneider and Nyathi Motlojoa at first doubles.
 
First singles de Rezende downed Schneider 6-0, 7-6 and Alex was a 6-0, 6-3 winner over Motlojoa at number two.
 
Sugumaran returned to his third singles spot to score a 6-2, 6-2 win over Norwood and Panosso rallied to beat Sakchham 2-6, 6-4, 10-5 at number four. Cassens suffered a 6-4, 7-6 setback to Ortega at number five and Boudreau downed Weill 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 at sixth singles.
