Sriram Sugumaran won both of his singles matches Saturday
and one of two in doubles action, as Augustana defeated
Hope and Calvin by scores of 7-2 in Michigan.
Augustana traveled to Michigan on Saturday to take on Hope and Calvin in dual meets in Holland and Grand Rapids, respectively. Coach
Jon Miedema's crew was victorious twice in his home state, defeating both the Flying Dutchmen and Knights by scores of 7-2 to improve to 4-1 on the season. On Saturday, February 15, the Vikings will be back at the Quad City Tennis Club to host Rose-Hulman and Coe.
AUGUSTANA 7, HOPE 2
HOLLAND, Mich.—In its first dual of the day, Augustana defeated a Hope program that was rated 18th in the Central Region in the final 2018-19 ITA rankings. The Vikings came away a 7-2 victor at the DeWitt Tennis Center.
The hosts actually grabbed a 1-0 lead with a win at first singles. Danny Kroeze and Jacob Burkett bested Augustana juniors
Sriram Sugumaran (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) and
Peter Alex (Hinsdale South HS, Darien, Ill.) by a score of 8-6. The Vikings claimed the other two doubles matches by identical 8-5 counts. At number two, sophomores
Leonardo Panosso (La Sale Caxias, Caxias Do Sul, Brazil) and
Kyle Boudreau (Antioch HS, Antioch, Ill.) downed Alec Berrodin and Paul Washington and at number three, it was junior
Caio de Rezende (Colegio Itoca, Sao Paulo, Brazil) and sophomore
Justin Cassens (Emerald Ridge HS, Puyallup, Wash.) defeating Cameron Coates and Matt Henkel.
Panosso and Sugumaran got Miedema's outfit off to a great start in singles action. Panosso was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Washington at number four and Sugumaran downed Coates by the same score at number three.
Hope narrowed it deficit to 4-2 with a win at fifth singles, where Tyler Koran beat Cassens 6-4, 6-2, but Augustana captured the last three singles bouts. De Rezende defeated Burkett 6-4, 6-0 at number one. Alex was a 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) winner over Kroeze at number two and Boudreau downed Henkel 6-1, 7-5 at number six.
AUGUSTANA 7, CALVIN 2
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—The Vikings swept the doubles action versus Calvin. Miedema's first and third doubles teams both won 8-4. Sugumaran and Alex defeated Jose Larrea and Max Satllings at number one and Cassens and de Rezende bested Daniel Huan and Kyrus Tsai at number three. Panosso and Boudreau took care of Cobe Benzel and Owen Brookhouse 8-5 at number two.
De Rezende suffered a 6-3, 7-5 setback to Larrea at first singles, but Alex, Sugumaran and Cassens were winners at numbers two, three and four, respectively. Alex downed Stallings 6-4, 6-2. Sugumaran won 6-3, 6-0 over Brookhouse and Cassens was a 7-5, 6-1 winner over Tsai.
Benzel got the better of Boudreau four and four at fifth singles, but freshman
Vinicius Lopes (Rondonopolis, Brazil) defeated Huan 7-5, 6-4 at number six.
