Cornell at 285 pounds on Wednesday night in the Carver Center. Skold's
win secured Augustana's 23-19 win over the Rams.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – A takedown in the final 10 seconds of the 285 pound weight class by freshman Daniel Skold (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Plainfield, Ill.) lifted Augustana to a thrilling 23-19 victory over Cornell on Wednesday, February 19. Skold's takedown in the waning moments of his match with the Rams Alex Heisdorffer touched off a frantic celebration in the Carver Center, as the Vikings celebrated Senior Night.

Skold and Heisdorffer were tied at 1-1 with Heisdorffer getting an escape to start the second period while Skold tied the match at the beginning of the third stanza. Skold finally secured his takedown near the edge of the mat with the clock winding down.

The team score at the time of the 285 pound weight class had Augustana ahead 20-19 so the winner of the match would seal the victory for his team.

Sophomore Ellex Williams (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) opened the match for the Vikings of head coach Tony Willaert with a pin at 2:38 over Griffin Gravel at 125 pounds. That gave Augustana a 6-0 lead. Cornell had back-to-back major decisions at 133 and 141 to grab an 8-6 lead when senior Freddy Terranova (Jackson Memorial HS, Jackson, N.J.) scored a technical fall (27-11) over Klayton Keller at the 6:35 mark. The match was actually tied 11-11 and Terranova ripped off the final 16 points.

Junior Danny Terronez (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) picked up a hard-earned 7-3 win over Casey Allen at 157 to put the Vikings up 14-8.

Cornell picked up a technical fall at 165 before senior Josh Bush (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) pinned John Marsh at 1:34 of the 174 pound weight class. That gave Augustana a 20-13 lead and then Cornell was deducted a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct to make it 20-12 with three weight classes remaining.

The Rams won at 184 and 197 to set up the decisive bout at 285.

Augustana finishes the season 1-7 in dual meets while Cornell is 3-6. The Vikings will travel to Dubuque, Iowa on February 29 and March 1 for the NCAA Lower Midwest Regional.
