Lauren Hall is mobbed by her teammates after one of her school record eight
three point field goals on Saturday night in the Vikings 64-53 win over Carthage.
On the same night that Hall was setting the record, Alexis Jones (#2) was eclipsing
the 1000 point mark for her career.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – On a night when senior
Alexis Jones (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) hit a career milestone, it was sophomore
Lauren Hall (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) who shot her way into the Augustana record book. The Vikings rolled past Carthage 64-53 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action on Saturday, February 15 in the Carver Center.
Jones eclipsed the 1,000 point barrier, becoming just the 12
th player in Augustana history to hit that mark but it was Hall's hot hand that had the Carver Center buzzing. She led the Vikings in scoring with 26 points as she drilled eight on nine three point field goals. For the game she was nine of 12 from the field and had eight rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Her eight three point field goals broke a record that had been held by four different players. The old mark was six, set first by Amy Hall on February 23, 1991 against Carthage. Kristen Pence tied it on January 30, 2005 against Carthage while
Jen VanWatermeulen had six against Coe on December 20, 2015. Jones was the fourth player to hit six three point field goals in a single game when she did it on February 10, 2019 against Carthage.
Augustana rolled out to a 21-13 lead after one quarter as Hall hit three of her eight three-point field goals in the first 10 minutes. The Vikings actually scored the first 13 points of the game over the first three minutes of action.
Mia Lambert (Macomb HS, Macomb, Ill.) had two three point field goals and a layup while Hall had a three point field goal and a pair of two pointers in the opening salvo.
Carthage had the upper hand in the second quarter, outscoring Augustana 16-9 and at halftime the Vikings led by a single point (30-29). The Vikings came out in the third period and went on a 12-2 run to take a 42-31 lead with 2:33 left in the stanza.
At the end of the third quarter Augustana led 44-35 but over the first four minutes of the fourth quarter a 14-5 run by the Lady Reds knotted the game at 49-49 with 6:00 left to play.
Hall came to the rescue for the home team as she knocked down back to back three point field goals from the top of the key at 4:57 and 4:33 respectively. That gave the Vikings a 55-49 lead. Jones made one free throw at 3:46 to push the lead to 56-49 and give her 999 career points. She missed the second free throw that would have put her at exactly 1,000 points.
Carthage cut the lead to 56-50 on a free throw by Autumn Kalis with 2:54 left. With 2:42 to go Hall hit her eighth (and final) three point field goal of the night to make it 59-50 and after a Lady Reds turnover Jones scored on a layup at the 2:15 mark and that pushed her past 1,000 points.
Lambert made three of four free throws in the final 1:37 to help keep Carthage at bay and account for the final score of 64-53.
Besides Hall's 26 points, Lambert scored 13 while Jones and senior
Jeni Crain (Woodstock HS, Woodstock, Ill.) each had seven. Hall led the team with eight rebounds while Jones and freshman
Gabriela Loiz (Alleman Catholic HS, Davenport, Iowa) each pulled down seven.
Carthage got 22 points from Sammie Woodward, who played all 40 minutes in the game.
Augustana is now 12-12 overall and 7-8 in the CCIW while Carthage is 11-12 and 6-8 in league play.
The Vikings close out the 2019-20 regular season with a Senior Night game on Saturday, February 22 at 5:00 p.m.
