Augustana rolls past Wabash and IIT

Saturday to help Augustana defeat Wabash and Illinois Tech at
the Quad City Tennis Club.

MOLINE, Ill.—Coach Jon Miedema's men got the "spring" season off to a solid start Saturday, defeating Wabash 9-0 and Illinois Tech 7-2 at the Quad City Tennis Club. Augustana will take a 2-0 record into a dual meet at fourth-ranked University of Chicago on Friday, January 31.

The Vikings opened with a dominant performance against the Little Giants. Miedema's gang dropped a total of just three games in rolling to a 9-0 victory.
 
Senior Scott Daluga (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) and junior Caio de Rezende (Colegio Itoca, Sao Paulo, Brazil) got Augustana off of the right foot with an 8-0 win over Emerson Courter and Gerald Randle at third doubles. Sophomores Kyle Boudreau (Antioch HS, Antioch, Ill.) and Leonardo Panosso (La Sale Caxias, Caxias do Sul, Brazil) won by the same score at number two, downing Devin Vanyo and Paul Hargitt, and juniors Peter Alex (Hinsdale South HS, Darien, Ill.) and Sriram Sugumaran (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) complete the doubles sweep with an 8-1 win over Nieshaal Thambipillay and Reed Mathis at number one.
 
In singles action, senior Ryan Sullivan (The Gow School, Winnetka, Ill.) downed Randle 6-0, 6-0 at number six and freshman Vinicius Lopes (Rondonopolis, Brazil) was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Courter at number five.
 
De Rezende won love and love over Thambipillay at first singles, as did Alex over Mathis at number two.
 
Sugumaran pitched another shutout, defeating Vanyo at number three and sophomore Justin Cassens (Emerald Ridge HS, Puyallup, Wash.) finished off the sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Hargitt at number four.
 
AUGUSTANA 7, ILLINOIS TECH 2
 
Augustana claimed all three doubles matches against the Scarlet Hawks by scores of 8-5. Alex and Sugumaran defeated Davis Housman and Brody Croonquist at number one. Panosso and Boudreau downed Roman Shishlov and Alann Torres at number two and Daluga and de Rezende bested Yousef Abdo and Andy Fang at number three.
 
De Rezende was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Shishlov at first singles and Alex handled Housman 6-0, 6-2 at number two. Sugumaran and Panosso scored respective 7-5, 6-3 wins at numbers three and four. Sugumaran got the better of Abdo and Panosso defeated Torres.
 
IIT's two wins came at fifth and sixth singles, where Adam Laitinen beat Boudreau 6-2, 7-6 and Fang bested Daluga 7-5, 6-0, respectively.
