Junior Jessica Nguyen had 54
digs and three aces Friday, as
Augustana split two matches at
the Viking Classic.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana extended its winning streak to five matches with a straight-set win over Coe Friday at the Viking Classic. Later in the evening, the streak was snapped by a four-set loss to Wartburg at Carver Center. Coach
Kelly Bethke's squad is now 8-8 on the season and will wrap up tournament play with a match against St. Mary's (Minn.) Saturday, September 28 at noon.
AUGUSTANA 3, COE 0 (27-25, 25-16, 25-23)
In the evening's first match, Bethke's downed Coe (8-10) in straights sets.
Augustana grabbed the lead early in the opening game, benefitting from five consecutive Kohawk errors and getting a
Laura Heuermann (Washington HS, Washington, Ill.) kill to go up 10-6. After a timeout, Coe rallied to take a 14-13 lead on a kill by Bryce Klein. The visitors extended the advantage to 19-16, but kills by
Grace Bialobok (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Homewood, Ill.) and
Taylor Steger (Red Wing HS, Goodhue, Minn.) helped the Vikings pull even at 20-all. After the Kohawks went back up 22-20, Augustana claimed seven of the last 10 points, fighting off one set point before a
Brooke Harmon (Lindbergh HS, St. Louis, Mo.) ace and a Coe error gave them a 27-25 win.
The Vikings led wire-to-wire in a 25-16 game-two victory. Kills by Harmon, freshman
Ja'Nya Davis (Narbonne HS, Harbor City, Calif.) and Bialobok put them up 3-0 off the bat and Bialobok added three more as the lead grew to 17-8. Morgan Kluesner had a pair of service aces in a 6-0 Kohawk run that cut it to 17-14, but Steger and Heuerman each had two kills as Augustana took eight of the last 10 points. The second of Heuerman's provided set point.
Game three saw the Vikings come from behind to complete the sweep with a 25-23 win. Two Morgan Wills kills and another by Kate Tidman gave Coe a 3-0 lead. Augustana stayed within striking distance, but Madi Parson had two kills as the Kohawks stretched their margin to 19-14. Heuerman answered with a kill to start the Vikings' rally. Consecutive aces by
Jessica Nguyen (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) cut the deficit further and the hosts finally pulled even at 20-all on a Coe attack error. Heuerman and Harmon followed with kills and after the teams traded service errors, the Kohawks got a Kluesner kill and an Elli Teeple ace to tie it at 23-all. Another Coe service error put the ball in Harmon's hands and she delivered match point with another ace.
Bialobok finished with 11 kills and Heuerman 10. Davis had five kills and three blocks and Harmon and Steger each finished with five fills and two blocks. Harmon added a pair of aces. Sophomore
Olivia Doak (Crystal Lake Central HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) finished with 26 assists and 14 digs and Nguyen had match bests of 21 digs and three aces.
WARTBURG 3, AUGUSTANA 1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-23, 25-13)
Wartburg (13-6) snapped Augustana's winning streak in the nightcap.
The Vikings battled back from an early deficit in game one, but couldn't hang on, falling 25-22. Wartburg jumped in front 5-0. Augustana fought back to eventually tie it at 14-all on a Bialobok kill. A Steger kill and Doak ace put the hosts on top 16-14 before the Knights tied it with consecutive points. Another Bialobok kill gave the Vikings their final lead at 17-16, but Wartburg answered with four straight points and would lead the rest of the way. Set point came when a Bialobok kill attempt was just long.
A 10-0 run with
Madi Glatz (Morton HS. Morton, Ill.) serving keyed a 25-22 second-set win for Augustana. The Knights took six straight points to go ahead 10-4 and eventually stretched their advantage to 19-12. A Wartburg attack error gave Glatz the serve and the Vikings ran off the next nine points to take a 22-19 lead. Heuerman had four kills in the spurt and after the Knights claimed a point, she added another to make it 23-20. Augustana claimed the next point as well. Wartburg fought off two set points before a Steger kill ended it.
It looked like the Vikings might pull off a similar comeback in game three, but the Knights were able to hold them off, winning 25-23. After Augustana jumped in front 9-4, Natalie Clayberg had two kills in an 8-0 run that gave Wartburg a 12-9 advantage. The Knights maintained the lead until the Vikings scored four straight to tie it at 23-all. Harmon and Heuerman had kills and
Brooke Keegan (Hall HS, Ladd, Ill.) an ace in the run. A service error gave the advantage back to the visitors and they claimed set point via an Augustana attack error.
A Kylie Bildstein kill broke a 3-3 tie in game four and Wartburg would lead the rest of the way, coasting to a 25-13 win. A Clayberg kill made it 11-5 and she teamed up on a block with Dani Johnson that pushed the margin to 24-13. Match point came on another Clayberg kill.
Bialobok (15) and Heuerman (13) were again the Vikings' kill leaders. Doak had 34 assists, two aces and 11 digs. Nguyen recorded a career-high 33 digs, with Glatz (11),
Savana Sparks (Maroa-Forsyth HS, Maroa, Ill.) (11) and Keegan (10) in double figures as well.
