Johnson & Sommers win titles as Vikings finish second in CCIW Championships

Senior Michael Johnson won the 100 and took second in the 200 at the CCIW
Championships on Saturday, May 4 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He also led off the 4x100
relay team that finished second.

KENOSHA, Wis. – Fueled by individual victories from seniors Michael Johnson (Owensboro HS, Owensboro, Ky.) and Clayton Sommers (Saydel HS, Des Moines, Ill.), Augustana finished second in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, May 4 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Vikings scored 149.5 while North Central was winning the team title with 250. Wheaton took third with 100.5 and Millikin was fourth with 85. Carroll (82), Carthage (69), Illinois Wesleyan (39), North Park (19) and Elmhurst (17) rounded out the field.
 
Johnson won the 100 with a time of :10.67 and took second in the 200 in :21.80. He was also the leadoff runner on the 4x100 relay that placed second in :42.58. He was joined on that unit by sophomore Bradley Kohler (Woodstock North HS, Woodstock, Ill.), senior Logan Enstrom (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) and sophomore Noah Patterson (Mattoon HS, Mattoon, Ill.).
 
Sommers took first in the 400 intermediate hurdles in :53.73 and was third in the 110 high hurdles in :15.58. He also ran leadoff on the fourth place 4x400 relay team that clocked 3:24.44 and consisted of Kohler, sophomore Joshua Teets (Burlington Central HS, Maple Park, Ill.) and freshman Ian Rothery (Wheaton North HS, Wheaton, Ill.). Teets had a busy day as he was sixth in the 800 (1:56.22) and sixth in the 1500 (3:59.68).
 
Sophomore Mason Wright (Polo HS, Woosung, Ill.) took second in the triple jump with a leap of 45' 11 ¼". Junior Joshua Mathis (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) placed second in the shot with a toss of 49' 3". Freshman Tyree Colbert (St. Laurence HS, Chicago, Ill.) took third in the high jump with a clearance of 6' 3 ¼". Sophomore Ryan Thornton (Limestone HS, Mapleton, Ill.) placed third in the decathlon with 6,010 points.
 
Senior Brandon Wilkerson (Tri-Point HS, Stelle, Ill.) came back after winning the 3000 steeplechase on Friday and placed fourth in the 5,000 with a time of 15:01.32.
 
Freshman Judd Anderson (Farmington HS, Elmwood, Ill.) was fourth in the 110 high hurdles (:15.59) and fifth in the 400 intermediate hurdles (:55.90). Sophomore Peyton Couch (Ottawa HS, Marseilles, Ill.) finished sixth in the decathlon with 5,273 points.
