Vikings roll into CCIW Championship match with 5-0 win over Carthage

Vikings beat Carhage 5-0 in the CCIW semi-final.

DECATUR, Ill. – Augustana rolled into the championship round of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championship with an impressive 5-0 win over Carthage on Friday, May 3 at Fairview Park in Decatur, Illinois. After beating Carroll by an identical 5-0 score on Thursday afternoon, the Vikings repeated that score in the semi-final against the Red Men. Augustana will now play in the championship match on Saturday, May 4 at 3:30 p.m. at Fairview Park.
 
Head coach Jon Miedema's team jumped off to a 3-0 lead in doubles and then closed out the match with two wins in singles.
 
The number one team of sophomores Sriram Sugumaran (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) and Peter Alex (Hinsdale South HS, Darien, Ill.) scored another close victory, this one by a score of 8-7 against Tripp Schulte and Andre Antreassian. This was the same score that Sugumaran and Alex won by in the victory over Carroll the day before.
 
Sophomore Alvaro Leal (Maristas Valencia; Valencia, Spain) and freshman Leonardo Panosso (La sale Caxias; Caxias Do Sul, Brazil) beat Daniel Moore and Matt Krzewinski 8-5 at number two. The number three team of senior Jack Morkin (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and sophomore Caio DeRezende (Colegio Itoca; Sao Paulo, Brazil) beat John Nykyfault and Fordy Leipold 8-1.
 
Leal beat Schulte 6-0; 6-2 at number two singles and sophomore Rodrigo Medeiros (Reino; Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) beat Kevin Dunn 6-1; 6-0 at number six.
 
DeRezende was trailing 5-6 at number one to Moore when the match ended. Alex trailed Antreassian 1-6; 1-2 at number two while sophomore Guillherme Calixto (Calegria; Presidente Prudente, Sao Paulo, Brazil) was leading Nykyforuk 6-4 at number four. Morkin was at 6-1; 2-5 with Krzewinski at number five when the Vikings clinched the win.
