Vikings go 5-2 in dual meets; finish fourth at CCIW Championships; Crown conference champions in three events; 17 school records broken or tied
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Led by a freshman class that accounted for 15 of Augustana's 17 new school records, Coach
Dan Lloyd's Viking women went 5-2 in dual meets, finished fourth at the CCIW Championships and crowned two individual and one relay conference champion in 2018-19.
Augustana tied or broke records in 13 of 18 individual events, with three of the surviving marks being the 50 breaststroke, 50 butterfly and 100 individual medley—events which are rarely contested these days. This year's squad also took down four of five relay records, with three of them erased by an all-freshman foursome.
The Vikings won three straight dual meets to open the season, downing St. Ambrose (136-101) on October 5 in Davenport, Iowa and Knox (178-34) and Millikin (158-58) at home on October 27.
Facing stiff competition at the Soka Invitational in Alisa Viejo, California on November 10, Augustana placed fifth of seven teams. Freshman
Lauren Raike (Alamo Heights HS, San Antonio, Texas) started the assault on the record book, setting a new school mark in the 200 breaststroke which she would better later in the season.
A 168-34 dual-meet win at Monmouth preceded the Illinois Wesleyan and Wheaton Invitationals, where the Vikings finished third and sixth, respectively. Raike set a new school record in the 400 individual medley with a 4:37.16 at Wheaton.
The new calendar year started with a 195-97 dual-meet setback at Carthage and a third-place finish among nine teams at the Grinnell Invitational. Freshman
Aviana Zahara (Pleasant Valley HS, Moline, Ill.) took down Nancy Fabrizio's 31-year old 50 backstroke record with a :27.63 at Carthage.
On February 2 in Wheaton, Illinois, Lloyd's bunch defeated North Central 155-65, but fell to the host Thunder 150-123.
At the CCIW Championships in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin on February 14-16, Augustana matched its highest finish since 1999, finishing fourth. Freshman
Madelynn Marunde (Belvidere North HS, Belvidere, Ill.) won the 1650 freestyle in a school-record 17:35.76. Zahara set a school record of :57.05 in winning the 100 backstroke and both swam on the CCIW champion 200 medley relay (school-record 1:46.38), along with Raike and freshman
Isabelle Seten (Centennial HS, Champaign, Ill.). All four earned All-CCIW honors.
A total of 15 school records fell at the conference meet. Marunde broke four individual marks and was a member of three record-setting relays. Zahara broke two more individual records, tied another and swam on all four record-setting relays, where she was joined by Raike and Seten. Raike also took down a pair of individual marks, while senior
Mia Polinski (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) and junior
Gabrielle Ainsworth (Hononegah HS, South Beloit, Ill.) each erased one. Ainsworth was also part of a relay record.
