Vikings fall to 2nd-ranked Chicago in NCAA tourney

Despite falling 5-0 to Chicago in the second round of the NCAA
Tournament on Saturday, Coach Jon Miedema's 2018-19 Vikings
set a school record with 25 dual meet wins.

CHICAGO, Ill. – The winningest season in the history of Augustana men's tennis came to an end Saturday, as the University of Chicago, ranked second in the nation, defeated the Vikings 5-0 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at Stagg Field Courts. Coach Jon Miedema's squad finished its season with a school-record 25 dual-meet victories against just seven defeats. The Maroons advanced to face Gustavus Adolphus on Sunday with a record of 18-2.
 
In doubles play, Chicago's Tyler Raclin and Jeremy Yuan downed sophomore Caio de Rezende (Colegio Itoca, Sao Paulo, Brazil) and senior Jack Morkin (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) 8-2 at number three to put the hosts up 1-0.
 
At first doubles, sophomores Peter Alex (Hinsdale South HS, Darien, Ill.) and Sriram Sugumaran (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) dropped an 8-2 decision to Erik Kerrigan and Ninan Kumar. Despite the setback, the Viking duo finished the season with a school-record 22 wins together.
 
Charlie Pei and Joshua Xu completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win over sophomore Alvaro Leal (Maristas Valencia, Valencia, Spain) and freshman Leonardo Panosso (La Sal Caxias, Caxias do Sul, Brazil).
 
Chicago singles wins at number five and six ended the dual.
 
Morkin, who fell 6-1, 6-0 to Alex Gushva at number six, finished his career tied for 12th in school history with 56 singles wins. His 64 doubles wins rank 12th all-time and his 120 total victories are 11th-most in program history.
 
Alejandro Rodriguez clinched the victory for the Maroons with a 6-0, 6-0 win over sophomore Guilherme Calixto (Calegria, Presidente Prudente, Sao Paulo, Brazil) at number five.
