ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Seniors Caitlyn Schaffer (Kenwood Academy, Chicago, Ill.) and Madeline Lombardi (Edwardsville HS, Glen Carbon, Ill.) etched their names in the Augustana record book on Friday, April 5 at the Lower Campus Courts. In a 9-0 Viking victory over Central of Iowa, Schaffer and Lombardi, playing at number one doubles, established a new school record for career doubles victories as a team.

Schaffer and Lombardi defeated Jenna Stewart and Alyssa Lewton 8-1 for the 64th win as a team during their collective careers. They are now 64-26 and they eclipsed the previous record of 63 (63-13) set by Erin Roti and Liz Kavanaugh from 1996 to 1999.

The Vikings went 3-0 to start the match by sweeping the doubles. Along with Schaffer and Lombardi, the number two team of sophomore Annie Timm (Prairie Ridge HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) and junior Zeana Badawi (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) won by a score of 8-0 over Bronwyn Metcalf and Maddie Hartley. The number three team of sophomores Morgan Bullen (Colorado Academy, Lakewood, Colo.) and Leraaen Abbott (Belvidere North HS, Belvidere, Ill.) defeated Katie Larson and Sarah Schirm 8-3.

With the 3-0 advantage heading into singles, Augustana wasted little time as five of the six matches were decided in straight sets. Schaffer, who tied Dana Goggin (2013-17) today for combined victories in a career with 193, defeated Stewart 6-1; 6-1 at number one singles. Schaffer has 94 singles wins and she is just six shy of catching Lauren Goggin (100 from 2013-17) for second on the career singles list.

Timm beat Kirsten Jordan 6-0; 6-0 at number two and Badawi picked up a similar 6-0; 6-0 victory over Laurynn Mize at number three.

Lombardi beat Schirm 6-0; 6-2 at number four and Bullen took care of Lewton 6-0; 6-2 at number five. Abbott went three sets before putting away Hartley 6-4; 4-6 10-8.

Augustana, ranked 13th in the NCAA Division III Central Region, is now 15-2 overall while Central of Iowa falls to 11-9. The Vikings of head coach Jon Miedema will be in action again on Friday, April 12 with matches against Calvin (10:00 a.m.) in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Hope (4:00 p.m.) in Holland, Michigan.
