Vikings drop 7-2 decision to regionally ranked Luther

Sophomore Peter Alex won at both number one doubles and number three singles
in battle against regionally ranked Luther on Sunday.

DECORAH, Iowa – In a battle between two teams ranked in the NCAA Division III's Central Region, Augustana (11th) dropped a 7-2 decision to Luther (15th) on Sunday, April 28 in Decorah, Iowa. The Vikings, which just completed an undefeated College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin dual meet season, are now 21-6 overall heading into the CCIW Tournament this coming weekend. Luther, which is coached by former Augustana head coach Adam Strand, is now 16-6.
 
The Vikings got one win in doubles and one win in singles and sophomore Peter Alex (Hinsdale South HS, Darien, Ill.) was involved in both victories. He teamed with fellow sophomore Sriram Sugumaran (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) to defeat Nate Parsons and Cole Schneider at number one by a score of 8-3.
 
Alex also won at number three singles when he dispatched of Parsons 6-4 (11-9); 3-6; 1-0. For Alex it was his 21st singles win of the season and puts him within two of tying Jack Cullen's 2009 record of 23 singles victories.
 
Augustana dropped an 8-5 decision at number two when sophomore Rodrigo Medeiros (Reino, Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) and freshman Leonardo Panosso (La sale Caxias; Caxias Do Sul, Brazil) lost to Brian Murman and Ryan Ortega. At number three the Vikings duo of freshman Kyle Boudreau (Antioch HS, Antioch, Ill.) and sophomore Caio DeRezende (Colegio Itoca; Sao Paulo, Brazil) lost to Grant Morton and Brook Norwood 8-2.
 
DeRezende fell 3-6; 5-7 to Schneider at number one singles and Sugumaran lost 6-4; 0-5, retired to Morton at number two.
 
Sophomore Calixto Guilherme (Calegria; Presidente Prudente, Sao Paulo, Brazil) fell 2-6; 4-6 to Murman at number four and Medeiros lost 3-6; 2-6 to Norwood at number five. Panosso dropped a 3-6; 0-6 decision to Jake Smith at number six.
