Vikings move to 4-0 in CCIW with win at Carthage

as the Vikings beat Carthage 6-3 in CCIW action on Thursday.

KENOSHA, Wis. – Despite having to mix his lineup up a bit, Augustana head men's tennis coach Jon Miedema was still able to hit the right buttons on Thursday, April 18 in a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin dual match with Carthage. The Vikings took care of the Red Men 6-3 and moved to 18-5 overall and 4-0 in league play. Miedema's team is currently ranked 11th in NCAA Division III's Central Region.
 
Augustana came out of doubles play with a 2-1 lead and the first team off the court was the number three duo of senior Jack Morkin (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and sophomore Caio DeRezende (Colegiao Itoca; Sao Paulo, Brazil). Morkin and DeRezende, who were playing together for just the sixth time this season, routed Andre Antreassian and Fordy Leipold 8-1. The Red Men evened the match at 1-1 when the number two team of Daniel Moore and Matt Krzewinski beat the Vikings squad of freshman Leonardo Panosso (La slae Caxia; Caxias Do Sul, Brazil) and sophomore Rodrigo Medeiros (Reino; Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) 8-3.
 
The Vikings number one team of sophomores Sriram Sugumaran (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) and Peter Alex (Hinsdale South HS, Darien, Ill.) have been consistent winners all season and they moved to 14-11 with an 8-3 win over Tripp Schulte and John Nykforuk.
 
When the action shifted to singles Augustana quickly won three matches to clinch the victory.
 
At number five Panosso beat Krzewinski 6-4; 6-2 and then Medeiros handled Kevin Dunn 7-5; 6-2 at number six. The clincher came at number one when DeRezende beat Moore 6-3; 6-4 to give the Vikings their fifth point of the match.
 
The other win for Augustana came at number two where Alex moved his record to a glossy 18-4 this year with a hard-fought 6-2; 1-6; 11-9 win over Schulte.
 
Carthage's Antreassian beat the Vikings Guilherme Calixto (Calegria; Presidente Prudente, Sao Paulo, Brazil) at number three 5-7; 7-5; 10-6 and the Red Men's Nykyforuk defeated Viking senior Jack Morkin (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) 6-4; 7-6 at number four.
 
The Vikings will be in action again on Friday, April 19 against Carroll in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
