Vikings drop pair of matches in Michigan

Augustana dropped a pair of matches in the state of Michigan on Friday, April 12. In the first match the Vikings fell to Calvin, the alma mater of their head coach Jon Miedema, by a narrow margin of 5-4 in a match played in Grand Rapids while in the nightcap they dropped an 8-1 decision to 32nd ranked Hope in Holland.
 
The Vikings are now 16-4 overall and ranked 13th in the latest NCAA Division III Central Region poll. They will face Grinnell at home on the Lower Campus Courts on Saturday, April 13. That match was originally scheduled for Sunday, April 14 as was one against Dubuque. The Dubuque match has been cancelled and the Grinnell contest moved up one day.
 
Senior Caitlyn Schaffer (Kenwood Academy, Chicago, Ill.) came up short on Friday in her quest to become the winningest player (combined singles and doubles victories) in Augustana women's tennis history. She currently has 193 victories (94 in singles and 99 in doubles) and needs three more to tie the school record of 196 set by Lauren Goggin from 2013-17.

Sophomore Leraaen Abbott picked up two victories on Friday.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Vikings let a 2-1 advantage from doubles slip away and fell to Calvin by a score of 5-4 on Friday, April 12 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
 
Augustana got wins from numbers two and three doubles to take a one point advantage heading into singles. Junior Zeana Badawi (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) and sophomore Annie Timm (Prairie Ridge HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) beat Alexis Bonner and Maria Poortenga at number two by a score of 8-2. Sophomores Morgan Bullen (Colorado Academy, Lakewood, Colo.) and Leraaen Abbott (Belvidere North HS, Belvidere, Ill.) defeated Maya Klopfenstein and Grace Brown 8-4 at number three.
 
At number one doubles the senior team of Caitlyn Schaffer (Kenwood Academy, Chicago, Ill.) and Madeline Lombardi (Edwardsville HS, Glen Carbon, Ill.) dropped an 8-2 decision to Leah Newhof and Madeline Brouwer.
 
Badawi beat Poortenga 7-5; 6-2 at number three singles and Bullen fought her way past Brown 6-4; 5-7; 10-4 at number five. Those were the only two singles victories for head coach Jon Miedema's Vikings.
 
Schaffer fell 5-7; 2-6 to Newhof at number one and Timm dropped a 6-3; 5-7; 3-6 decision to Brouwer at number two. Lombardi went three sets with Klopfenstein at number four before falling 6-2; 6-7; 3-6 and Abbott lost 4-6; 4-6 to Brittney Statema at number six.
 
HOPE 8, AUGUSTANA 1
 
HOLLAND, Mich. - The Flying Dutch are ranked 32nd in the nation in NCAA Division III and sixth in the Central Region and they proved it on Friday, April 12 in impressive fashion with an 8-1 win over Augustana. The Vikings came into the match ranked 13th in the Central Region.
 
Abbott was the lone winner for Miedema's team as she picked up a victory over Liz Pniewski at number six singles by default.
 
Hope jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles and were never headed. Schaffer and Lombardi fell 8-2 to Amanda Bandrowski and Claire Hallock at number one and Badawi and Timm dropped an 8-3 decision to Sydney Jackson and Taylor LaBarge at number two. The number three team of Abbott and Bullen fell 8-2 to Erin LaBarge and Bailey Chorney.
 
Schaffer lost 1-6; 1-6 to Hallock at number one and Timm fell 4-6; 0-6 to Bandrowski at number two. Badawi dropped a 0-6; 0-6 decision to Jackson at number six and Lombardi lost 4-6; 0-6 to Taylor LaBarge at number four. Bullen lost 4-6; 0-6 to Chorney at number five.
