ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – After losing twice on Friday, April 12 in the state of Michigan, Augustana made the trip back to Rock Island and were able to muster up enough stamina to pull off a victory over Grinnell less than 24 hours later. The Vikings beat the Pioneers 6-3 at the Lower Campus Courts after making the drive back from Holland, Michigan last night after losing to Calvin and Hope.
 
A clean sweep in the doubles started head coach Jon Miedema's team on its winning way. Seniors Madeline Lombardi (Edwardsville HS, Glen Carbon, Ill.) and Caitlyn Schaffer (Kenwood HS, Chicago, Ill.) picked up a win at number one doubles by a score of 8-3 over Abby Nielsen and Judith Fan. The number two team of sophomore Annie Timm (Prairie Ridge HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) and junior Zeana Badawi (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) beat Isabel Green and Brenda Guan 8-3. At number three the sophomore duo of Leraaen Abbott (Belvidere North HS, Belvidere, Ill.) and Morgan Bullen (Colorado Academy, Lakewood, Colo.) beat Sara Armano and Emma Gaydos 8-6.
 
It was strength at the top of the lineup in singles that sealed the victory for the Vikings. Schaffer defeated Nielsen 6-0; 6-2 at number one and Timm beat Gaydos 6-2; 6-2 at number two. Badawi beat Green 6-1; 6-2 at number three.
 
Lombardi fell 2-6; 2-6 to Fan at number four and Bullen went three sets with Lily Hamilton before falling 6-2; 4-6; 2-6 at number five. Abbott dropped a 6-2; 2-6; 5-6 decision to Amanao at number six.
 
The Vikings were supposed to play this match on Sunday, April 14 along with a dual against the University of Dubuque. This match got moved up a day because of the threat of bad weather on April 14 and the Dubuque match has been cancelled. The next action for Augustana will be April 22 at Chicago.
