Augustana claims team title at Viking Olympics

Senior Clayton Sommers won the 400 hurdles, finished sixth in the
110 hurdles and anchored Augustana's second-place 4x400 relay
Saturday at the Viking Olympics.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Seniors Cody Wheeler (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) and Clayton Sommers (Saydel HS, Des Moines, Iowa) recorded individual victories and Augustana claimed the team title over 27 other squads Saturday at the Viking Olympics. Coach Jake Shaver's Vikings prevailed in blustery conditions at Paul V. Olsen Track, edging second-place Loras by a margin of 118.33 to 113.83.  

Wheeler, last year's national runner up, threw the hammer 192' 7" to win that event and Sommers captured the 400 intermediate hurdles in a time of :54.80, while Judd Anderson (Farmington HS, Elmwood, Ill.) contributed a sixth-place :56.86.
 
Senior Ryan Ganson (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.), junior Nick Harvey (Burlington Central HS, Elgin, Ill.) and sophomore Josh Teets (Burlington Central HS, Maple Park, Ill.) each turned in second-place efforts. Ganson recorded a mark of 181' 5" in the javelin and Harvey ran a 1:59.09 in the 800. Teets clocked a 4:02.14 in the 1500, with senior Brandon Wilkerson (Tri-Point HS, Stelle, Ill.) finishing  eighth in 4:06.00.
 
Shaver's 4x100 and 4x400 relays also placed second. The 4x100 unit consisting of senior Michael Johnson (Owensboro HS, Owensboro, Ky.),  sophomore Bradley Kohler (Woodstock North HS, Woodstock, Ill.), senior Logan Enstrom (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) and sophomore Noah Patterson (Mattoon HS, Mattoon, Ill.) finished in :42.93 and the 1600 quartet of freshman Ian Rothery (Wheaton North, Wheaton, Ill.), Anderson, Kohler and Sommers ran a 3:28.45.
 
Augustana took third and fourth in the pole vault. Seniors Patrick Crompton (Hood River HS, Hood River, Ore.) and Mark VanderHeyden (Mercer County HS, Aledo, Ill.) both cleared 14' 7¼", with Crompton edging VanderHeyden on the basis of fewest misses.
 
Junior Joshua Mathis' (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) 48' 11" shot put was good for third place as well.
 
Anderson and Sommers placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 110 high hurdles. Anderson ran a :15.68 and Sommers finished in :15.79.
 
In the 3200-meter relay, junior Justin Verlinden (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.), senior Kristian Carroll (Pine Creek HS, Colorado Springs, Colo.) and freshmen Michael Gille (Harlem HS, Roscoe, Ill.) and Cole Long (Joliet West HS, Joliet, Ill.) finished fourth in 8:56.77.
 
Freshman Josh Boulanger (Brother Rice HS, Chicago, Ill.) went 21' 2" to place fifth in the long jump.
