Senior Caitlyn Schaffer won at both number one singles and doubles to help
lead Augustana to a 5-4 win over Birmingham Southern on Friday, March 1
in Orlando, Florida.
ORLANDO, Fla. – A clean sweep in doubles proved to be the decisive factor as Augustana fought its way past Birmingham Southern 5-4 on Friday, March 1 in non-conference women's tennis action in Orlando, Florida. The win capped a successful Florida road trip for head coach
Jon Miedema's Vikings on their spring break trip. Augustana won three of four matches in Orlando and is currently 12-1 overall.
Seniors
Madeline Lombardi (Edwardsville HS, Glen Carbon, Ill.) and
Caitlyn Schaffer (Kenwood Academy, Chicago, Ill.) fought off Isabella Wisener and Alyssa Yager to take an 8-6 victory at number one doubles. Lombardi and Schaffer are now 18-3 on the season. The number two team of sophomore
Annie Timm (Prairie Ridge HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) and junior
Zeana Badawi (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) rolled past Lexie Dillard and Ashton Henderson 8-3 to move to 15-3 this year.
At number three doubles the sophomore team of
Leraaen Abbott (Belvidere North HS, Belvidere, Ill.) and
Morgan Bullen (Colorado Academy, Lakewood, Colorado) pushed its mark to 12-4 with a hard-fought 8-7 victory over Harper Anderson and Emily Enoch.
Schaffer and Badawi came up with wins in singles to secure the win for the Vikings. At number one Schaffer defeated Wisener 6-4; 6-1 and is now 14-5 on the year. Badawi's victory came at number three and was 6-0; 6-2 over Anderson and she is now 17-5.
Yager defeated Timm 6-4; 3-6; 10-6 at number two and Enoch beat Lombardi 6-1; 6-3 at number four. Henderson won a three set match against Bullen 7-6; 4-6; 14-12 and Dillard defeated
Kalli Majewski (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) 6-4; 6-2.
Augustana will be in action again on Saturday, March 16 against Wisconsin-Whitewater (9:45 a.m.) and Cardinal Stritch (12:30 p.m.) in Janesville, Wisconsin.
