Vikings fall 7-2 to UW-Whitewater

Sunday, winning at fourth singles in the Vikings' 7-2 setback to UW-
Whitewater in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

LAKE GENEVA, Wis. – Coach Jon Miedema's Augustana men fell 7-2 Sunday to UW-Whitewater at the Lake Geneva Tennis Club. The Vikings are now 9-4 on the season, while the Warhawks improved to 7-1. On Saturday, March 23, Augustana takes on Rose-Hulman and Coe in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
 
The Vikings' two wins Sunday came at first and fourth singles. Reigning CCIW Player of the Week Caio de Rezende (Colegio Itoca, Sao Paulo, Brazil) was a 6-1, 7-5 winner over Jimmy Engelhart at number one and sophomore Guilherme Calixto (Calegria, Presidente Prudente, Sao Paulo, Brazil) posted a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 win over Brendan Pietila at number four.
 
Whitewater's Alex Gray and sophomore Peter Alex (Hinsdale South HS, Darien, Ill.) split two sets at number three singles before Gray eventually prevailed 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7).
 
Senior Jack Morkin (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) fell 6-4 7-6 (13-11) to Zach Wood at fifth singles. Sophomore Sriram Sugumaran (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) lost one and one to Ryan Mitchell at number two and at number six, freshman Leonardo Panosso (La sale Caxias, Caxias Do Sul, Brazil) dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Noah Guillermo.
 
The Warhawks swept the doubles matches. Morkin and sophomore Rodrigo Medeiros (Reino, Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) fell to Guillermo and Robert Rider 8-7 at number three. Engelhart and Gray downed Sugumaran and Alex 8-4 at number one and de Rezende and Panosso fell 8-1 to Mitchell and Wood at number two.
