Sophomore Caio DeRezende helped the Vikings to
a victory on Friday with a win in number one singles
and number three doubles against Birmingham-Southern.
ORLANDO, Fla. – The Augustana men's tennis team finished up its last day in the Orlando sun with a 6-3 victory over Birmingham-Southern on Friday, March 1 at the USTA National Campus.
The Vikings took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, with the duo of
Alvaro Leal (Maristas Valencia; Valencia, Spain) and
Leonardo Panosso (La sale Caxias; Caxias Do Sul, Brazil) taking number two doubles 8-4 over Anthony Pellegrini and Alex Wisener. Sophomore tandem Caio DeRezende
(Colegio Itoca; Sao Paulo, Brazil) and
Rodrigo Medeiros (Reino; Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) won number three doubles 8-2 over Ethan Gibson and Anthony Romano.
Sophomores
Peter Alex (Hinsdale South HS, Darien, Ill.) and
Sriram Sugumaran (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) fell at number one doubles 8-5 against Jamie Bekaert and Isaac Eck of Birmingham-Southern.
Augustana won four out of six singles matches with DeRezende winning 6-2; 6-3 over Pellegrini at number one and Leal defeating Bekaert 6-2; 6-0 at number two. Alex was victorious at number three with a 6-2; 6-3 performance over Wisener and
Jack Morkin (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) won 6-0; 6-2 over Eck at number five.
Guilherme Calixto (Calegria; Presidente Prudente, Sao Paulo, Brazil) fell 6-4; 3-6; 6-3 to Gibson at number four singles and
Kyle Boudreau (Antioch HS, Antioch, Ill.) lost 6-4; 6-4 at number six to Hunter Hoffmeister.
The Vikings are now 8-3 overall while Birmingham-Southern falls to 2-2. Augustana will be back in action at home against the Illinois Institute of Technology on Friday, March 8.
