Adarios Jones (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.), ranked third in the nation at 285 pounds, rolled to his first conference title Thursday at the CCIW Championships on the campus of Elmhurst College. Coach
Tony Willaert's Vikings placed seventh in the team standings at Faganel Hall with 53 points.
Jones' path to the championship started with a five-minute, 30-second 16-1 technical fall over Elmhurst's Zach Dixon in the quarterfinals. He pinned Collin Riley of Concordia in 3:58 in the semis to reach the title bout. Scheduled to face North Central's Audel Ochoa in the finals, he was awarded a medical forfeit. Jones had defeated Ochoa 3-0 in their previous meeting this year.
Jones, who finished second at the 2017 conference tournament before missing last year's event with an injury, improved to 20-0 on the year and 76-5 for his career.
Senior
Freddy Terranova (Jackson Memorial HS, Jackson, N.J.) and sophomore
Daniel Terronez (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) brought home third-place finishes for the Vikings at 157 and 149 pounds, respectively.
Terranova scored a 15-10 win over Concordia's Eric Martinson in the quarterfinals before suffering a 16-0 technical fall to Millikin's Braden Birt in the semis. He bounced back with a 6-4 sudden victory over Sam Rathburn of MSOE to reach the third-place match, where he downed Martinson again, 7-4. Terranova, who placed third in the CCIW at 141 pounds in 2017, moved his record to 17-10 on the year.
After receiving a quarterfinal bye, Terronez dropped a 5-1 decision to North Central's Anthony Rink in the semis. He captured third place with back-to-back major decisions in the consolation round, defeating Andrew Harrell of Wheaton 19-7 and Elmhurst's Caleb Ramos 15-3. Terronez has a team-high 26 wins this season against just 12 losses.
At 133, senior
Dale Charlier (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) finished fourth. He received a bye in the quarters before falling by major decision (12-3) to North Central's Jaime Suarez in the semis. A 3-1 win over Millikin's Ren Dazey got Charlier to the third-place match, where he dropped a 6-4 decision to Zach McCullough of Elmhurst. The CCIW's fourth-place 141-pounder a year ago, he is now 15-12 on the season.
Freshman
Hunter Holdcraft (La Salle-Peru HS, Seatonville, Ill.) placed sixth at 174 and classmate
Hunter Jarvis (Limestone HS, Bartonville, Ill.) and sophomore
Triston Richardson (North Scott HS, McCausland, Iowa) finished seventh at 184 and 197, respectively.
North Central defended last year's CCIW championship, placing first in the team standings with 133.5 points. Millikin, with 131.5, was a close second.
On Saturday and Sunday, February 23-24, Augustana will be competing at the NCAA Division III Lower Midwest Regional in Dubuque, Iowa.
