ORLANDO, Fla. – A clean sweep in doubles helped head coach
Jon Miedema's Augustana women's tennis team take down Davenport University 4-3 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida on Tuesday, February 26. Since Davenport is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, the match was played using NAIA rules, which awards only one point for doubles.
The Vikings jumped into a 1-0 lead after doubles, sweeping the Panthers in the three matchups. The duo of
Madeline Lombardi (Edwardsville HS, Glen Carbon, Ill.) and
Caitlyn Schaffer (Kenwood Academy HS, Chicago, Ill.) won number one doubles 6-4 over Adeline Nelson and Hannah Murphy. In number two,
Annie Timm (Prairie Ridge HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) and
Zeana Badawi (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) defeated Sophie Gossett and Bruna Ralheta 6-2.
Morgan Bullen (Colorado Academy HS, Lakewood, Colo.) and
Leraaen Abbott (Belvidere North HS, Belvidere, Ill.) won number three doubles by default.
In number one singles, Schaffer took care of business in a tough match over Nelson 4-6; 6-4; 10-7. Lombardi won at number four by forfeit against Vladislava Shumilova. At number six, Abbott took the point by default to give the Vikings a total of four points.
Timm lost a close match 6-4; 6-4 against Murphy at number two singles, Badawi fell 6-0; 6-3 to Ralheta at number three, and Bullen lost to Gossett 7-5; 6-1 at number five to give Davenport a total of three points.
The Vikings are now 11-1 overall while Davenport falls to 4-11. Augustana will play Birmingham-Southern on Friday, March 1 to finish up the Orlando trip.
