Senior Michael Johnson powers his way to a new school record in winning
the 60 on Saturday, February 23 at the CCIW Indoor Track & Field
Championships in Naperville,Illinois.
NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Senior
Michael Johnson (Owensboro HS, Owensboro, Ky.) established a new school record in the 60 as Augustana finished second in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, February 23 in Naperville, Illinois. The Vikings also got an individual championship from sophomore
Ryan Thornton (Limestone HS, Mapleton, Ill.) in the heptathlon in the second day of competition at North Central.
Johnson rolled to victory in the 60 with a time of :06.84 and that eclipsed his own school mark of :06.87 set earlier this year at the Olivet Nazarene Invitational on February 2 in Bourbonnais, Illinois. Johnson also placed second in the 200 with a time of :22.39.
Thornton had quite a day on Saturday as he won the heptathlon with 4,648 points and finished second in the high jump with a leap of 6' 4 ¾". In the heptathlon Thornton's sophomore teammate
Peyton Couch (Ottawa Township HS, Marseilles, Ill.) placed fourth with 4,224 points.
Junior Josh Mathis
(Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) was second in the shot put with a toss of 51' 11".
Senior
Brandon Wilkerson (Tri-Point HS, Stelle, Ill.) took fourth in the 3000 with a time of 8:45.72 just one day after placing sixth in the 5000. Sophomore
Mason Wright (Polo HS, Woosung, Ill.) was fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 45' 7 ¾" after winning the long jump a day earlier. Freshman
Judd Anderson (Elmwood HS, Elmwood, Ill.) took fourth in the 60 hurdles in :08.63.

Nick Harvey (Burlington Central HS, Elgin, Ill.), senior
Clayton Sommers (Saydel HS, Des Moines, Iowa) and sophomore Joshua Teets
(Burlington Central HS, Maple Park, Ill.) took fourth in 3:25.39. Sommers placed fifth in the 60 hurdles (:08.65) and sixth in the 400 (:50.76) while Teets was seventh (1:56.97) and Harvey took eighth (1:58.11) in the 800.
Augustana scored 113 points in the first CCIW Championships under the direction of first year head coach
Jake Shaver. North Central won the event with 218 points. The Vikings were well ahead of third place Millikin's 71 point total. Wheaton had 70 points in fourth and Carthage was fifth with 68. Carroll (62.5), Illinois Wesleyan (40), North Park (17.5) and Elmhurst (3) rounded out the field.
