Senior Zeana Badawi clinched Augustana's 5-4 win over Carthage
Friday with her victory at second singles.
KENOSHA, Wis. – Senior
Zeana Badawi (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) returned to the lineup Friday and won the clinching match at number two singles as Augustana defeated Carthage 5-4 at the Smeds Tennis Center. The Vikings extended their CCIW winning streak to 21 duals and improved to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference. The Lady Reds fell to 2-3 on the season and 2-3 in the CCIW.
Badawi had missed Augustana's last five competitions with an injury, but returned Friday to post a 7-5, 7-6 (3-0) second-singles victory over Jen Ptak, breaking a 4-4 tie and keeping the Vikings unbeaten.
The hosts led 2-1 after doubles play. Ptak and Giana Apostoli defeated Badawi and freshman
Lauren Oda (Elk Grove HS, Elk Grove Village, Ill.) 8-1 at number one. Junior
Kalli Majewski (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) and freshman
Lily Schoeck (Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) scored an 8-4 win over Nia Pham and Sierra Sonnemaker at number three before Sam Ramsey and Rachel Anderson gave Carthage the lead with an 8-3 win over
Annie Timm (Prairie Ridge HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) and
Leraaen Abbott (Belvidere North HS, Belvidere, Ill.) at number two.
In singles action, Oda beat Pham 6-3, 6-2 at number five and Apostoli put the Lady Reds up 3-2 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Timm. The teams continued to swap decisions, with Schoeck scoring a 6-2, 6-1 win over Anderson at number four and Ramsey downing Augustana freshman
Michaela Magee (Olathe East HS, Overland Park, Kan.) 6-2, 6-4 at number three.
Majewski bested Sonnemaker 6-3, 6-3 at number six, pulling the Vikings even at 4-4 and setting the stage for Badawi's clincher.
