MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Sophomore Daniel Terronez (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) led the way for the Augustana wrestling team on Saturday, January 12 at the Cliff Keen/Mike Duroe Invitational at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. Viking head coach Tony Willaert took an abbreviated roster to the tournament after the Blue & Gold had touch dual meets with Dubuque and Coe earlier in the week.

Augustana scored 26 points in the 18-team meet and finished in 15th place. Cornell won the invitational, which was named in honor of the Rams' former head coach Mike Duroe, who passed away earlier this year after a courageous bout with brain cancer, with 97.5 points. The Rams nudged out Wartburg, which was second with 97 points and Loras was third with 94. Stevens Institute of Technology had 91.5 points in fourth and Concordia-Moorhead was fifth with 90. Olivet (82), Augsburg (79), Luther 65.5; Dubuque (58.5) and Wisconsin-Platteville (48.0) rounded out the top 10.

Terronez was the lone place winner for the Vikings as he took fourth at 149 pounds. He opened the tournament with a pin in 2:56 of his match against Gage Griffin of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. He then lost 3-0 to teammate Freddy Terranova (Jackson Memorial HS, Jackson, N.J.) and went into the wrestle-back round. He ripped off four straight victories before losing to Jack Vaselaar of Augsburg 4-2 in the match for third place. Terronez has now taken over the lead for the Vikings in terms of matches won this year. His record is now 19-9.

Augustana will be back in action again on Friday, January 18 with a dual meet at Wisconsin-Platteville.
