Vikings bounce back with convincing victory over Carroll to even CCIW mark to 1-1

as the Vikings defeated Carroll 8-1 in CCIW action on Sunday.

MOLINE, Illinois – After a tough 6-3 loss in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin opener on Friday night, the Augustana men's tennis team rebounded in a big way just two days later on Sunday, April 8. The Vikings stopped Carroll 8-1 in a match moved indoors to the Quad City Tennis Club in Moline, Illinois due to the threat of cold and snow in the Quad City area.
 
Wins in two of the three doubles positions gave Head Coach Jon Miedema's team a 2-1 lead. The Vikings got an 8-5 win at number two from the freshman duo of Tom Friberg (Lund, Sweden) and Peter Alex (Hinsdale South HS, Darien, Ill.) over Chayce Roecker and Joseph Harrison. At number three the team of freshman Caio DeRezende (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and junior Jack Morkin (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) took care of Quentin Lamers and Mitchel Gjerseth 8-3.
 
Augustana lost at number one doubles when seniors Samuel Totten (University HS, Normal, Ill.) and Eric Pohl (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) dropped an 8-5 decision to Peer Jaeger and Matt  Michael.
 
When the match shifted to singles the Vikings did not lose any momentum and swept all six spots. Totten defeated Jaeger 6-2; 6-1 at number one and DeRezende beat Roecker 6-2; 6-1 at number two. Alex had the toughest match in singles for Augustana as he went three sets (6-0; 4-6; 7-6) before beating Harrison at number three.
 
Pohl took care of Michael 7-6; 6-2 at number four and Morkin beat Lamers 6-3; 6-3 at number five. Freshman Guilherme Calixto (Presidente Prudente, Brazil) got the call at number six and defeated Brian Trefilek 6-2; 6-3.
 
Augustana moved to 10-8 on the season and 1-1 in the CCIW while Carroll is now 6-5 and 1-1. The Vikings will play Illinois Wesleyan at home on Wednesday, April 11 at 4:00 p.m. This match was originally scheduled for Wednesday, April 4 but was pushed back due to bad weather last week.
