Sophomore John Daluga picked up a win at number four singles as
the Vikings closed out the 2018 regular season with a 9-0 win over Elmhurst
on Friday, April 27.
ELMHURST, Ill. –Augustana tuned up for the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Tournament with an impressive 9-0 men's tennis victory over Elmhurst on Friday, April 27 in Elmhurst, Illinois. The Vikings were never really threatened in this match as the short-handed Bluejays had to forfeit one match at singles and one at doubles.
The senior duo of
Samuel Totten (University HS, Normal, Ill.) and
Eric Pohl (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) led the way in the final regular season dual meet of their respective careers. Totten and Pohl, the school record holders for career doubles victories as a team, defeated David Demoll and Shawn Sabaricos 8-2 at number one. The number two team of freshmen
Tom Friberg (Lund, Sweden) and
Peter Alex (Hinsdale South HS, Darien, Ill.) defeated Tavious Imperial and Grant O'Connell 8-1 at number two.
The number three team of sophomore
Scott Daluga (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) and junior
Alex Riddle (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) picked up a forfeit at number three.
Totten was an easy 6-0; 6-0 winner over Demoll at number one singles and Pohl moved into the number two slot for this match and beat Sabaricos 6-1; 6-1. Freshman
Rodrigo Medeiros (Brazil) beat Grant O'Connell 6-4; 6-0 at number three and Daluga handled Nico Favuzzi 6-1; 6-2 at number four. Riddle won a 6-2; 6-0 decision over Imperial at number five while Friberg picked up a forfeit win at number six.
Augustana is now 15-10 overall and 6-1 in the CCIW and claimed the number one seed in the upcoming CCIW Tournament, which will begin on May 3 at the Nike Sports Complex in Naperville, Illinois. The Vikings will face Elmhurst, the number eight seed, in the opening round.
