Freshman Peter Alex picked up wins at number two singles and number
three doubles as the Vikings beat North Central 8-1 on Friday, April 13.
NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Augustana raced past North Central 8-1 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin men's tennis action on Friday, April 13 in Naperville, Illinois. The match was originally scheduled to be played in Rock Island on Saturday, April 14 but the forecast of bad weather in the Quad Cities forced the change.
The schedule change certainly didn't appear to bother Head Coach
Jon Miedema's Vikings as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in doubles and were never headed. Miedema juggled his lineup a bit as regular number one player
Samuel Totten (University HS, Normal, Ill.) sat out the match. Miedema inserted the freshman duo of
Rodrigo Medeiros (Brazil) and
Caio DeRezende (Sao Paulo, Brazil) into the number one slot. Medeiros and DeRezende responded with an 8-3 win over Marco Salazar and Alex Kohlmeier.
Senior
Eric Pohl (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.), who normally pairs with Totten at number one, moved into the number two position with freshman
Tom Friberg (Lund, Sweden) and the result was an 8-3 win over Victor Krueger and Lucas Pindak. At number three, freshman
Peter Alex (Hinsdale South HS, Darien, Ill.) and sophomore
Scott Daluga (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) defeated Tyler Haizel and Adam Winters in a tight 9-8 battle.
The Vikings didn't slow down much when the match switched to singles. DeRezende won at number one singles by a score of 7-6; 6-3 over Krueger. Alex defeated Winters 6-2; 6-2 at number two and Pohl took care of Salazar 6-3; 6-0 at number three. Medeiros scored a 6-4; 7-6 win over Haizel at number four and freshman
Guilherme Calixto (Presidente Prudente, Brazil) beat Kohlmeier 6-1; 6-3 at number five.
North Central's lone win came at number six singles where Pindak beat junior
Alex Riddle (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) 6-2; 6-4.
Augustana is now 12-8 overall and 3-1 in the CCIW and the Vikings have won three straight matches and six of their last eight. The next scheduled contest for Miedema's crew is Tuesday, April 17 at Wisconsin-Whitewater.
