Seniors Samuel Totten (front) and Eric Pohl (behind) set a new Augustana
school record for career victories with the same doubles partner in the Vikings
9-0 win over Illinois Wesleyan. Totten and Pohl now have a career record of
63-32 and broke the old mark of 62-18 held by John Jevitz and Steve Miller
from 1979-82.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Seniors
Samuel Totten (University HS, Normal, Ill.) and
Eric Pohl (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) etched their names into the Augustana men's tennis record books on Wednesday, April 11. The Vikings defeated Illinois Wesleyan 9-0 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action at the Lower Campus Courts and in the process Totten and Pohl set a new school record.
Playing at number one doubles Totten and Pohl defeated Kurt Meyer and Ryan Yoo of Illinois Wesleyan and with that victory the senior duo won for the 63
rd time. Totten and Pohl now have a career record of 63-32 and that is one better than the previous school record of 62 wins set by Tribe of Viking Hall of Famers John Jevitz and Steve Miller. Jevitz and Miller, who also played at number one doubles, went 62-18 over a career that spanned from 1979 through 1982.
Totten and Pohl begin the season in second place with a mark of 55-27 and are now 8-5 this year.
Augustana won at number two doubles with freshmen
Peter Alex (Hinsdale South HS, Darien, Ill.) and
Tom Friberg (Lund, Sweden) defeating Justin Piotrowski and Dylan Mikali 8-2. The number three team of
Alex Riddle (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and
Scott Daluga (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) beat Tim Hughes and Jimmy Kase 8-2.
When the scene shifted to single the Vikings momentum certainly did not. Totten moved to 15-6 when he beat Meyer 6-3; 6-0 at number one and freshman
Caio DeRezende (Sao Paulo, Brazil) upped his mark to 15-8 with a 6-0; 6-2 win over Piotrowski at number two.
Alex is now 12-7 after defeating Yoo 6-0; 6-3 at number three and Pohl is 8-5 after a 6-4; 6-3 win over Hughes at number four.
Freshman
Rodrigo Medeiros (Brazil) beat Mikali 6-1; 6-2 at number five and freshman Calixto Guilherme
(Presidente Prudente, Brazil) took care of Kase 6-1; 6-1.
Augustana is now 11-8 overall and 2-1 in the CCIW while the Titans fall to 2-9 and 0-4. Head Coach
Jon Miedema's team will be in action again on Saturday, April 14 with matches against North Central (9:00 a.m.) and Dubuque (3:00 p.m.).
