ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Junior Caitlyn Schaffer (Kenwood Academy, Chicago, Ill.) logged a three-set victory at first singles Thursday as Coach Jon Miedema's Augustana tennis team defeated Cornell 9-0 at the Lower Campus Courts. The Vikings improved to 16-5 on the season heading into the Midwest Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin on April 6-7. The Rams fell to 11-7.

Schaffer and sophomore Zeana Badawi (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) won by default over Cornell's Julia Thome and Rachel Ruiz at number one doubles. Freshmen Leraaen Abbott (Belvidere North HS, Belvidere, Ill.) and Maleeha Chowdhury (Rock Canyon HS, Highlands Ranch, Ill.) scored an 8-2 win over Megan Pope and Ellie Davidson at third doubles and at number two, Schaffer's usual partner, junior Madeline Lombardi (Edwardsville HS, Glen Carbon, Ill.), teamed with freshman Annie Timm (Prairie Ridge HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) to down Abbey Nelson and Katie Mintle 8-5.

In singles play, Timm won love and love over Nelson at number two and freshman Morgan Bullen (Colorado Academy, Lakewood, Colo.) was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Pope at number five.

Badawi bested Ruiz 6-1, 6-2 at third singles and freshman Faith Johnson (Harker Heights HS, Harker Heights, Ill.) defeated Mintle 6-0, 6-3 at number four.

At sixth singles, Chowdhury downed Davidson 6-2, 6-2. Schaffer rallied from a 3-6 first-set loss to Thome, taking sets two and three 6-0 and 10-6, respectively, to complete the Augustana sweep.
