Sophomore Karissa Gottardo (left) and senior Brandon Wilkerson (right) were the
winners of the Jack Swartz Award in the CCIW for the fall of 2018.
Sophomore
Karissa Gottardo (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) and senior
Brandon Wilkerson (Tri-Point HS, Stelle, Ill.) of Augustana have been named the winners of the Jack Swartz Award in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin for the fall of 2018. Gottardo was a mid-fielder for the Vikings soccer team while Wilkerson was the number one runner for the Blue & Gold in cross country.
There were a total of 67 Augustana athletes who were named academic all-conference honorees during the fall season, which included the sports of football, women's volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's cross country, women's cross country, women's tennis and women's golf.
The Jack Swartz Award is given to one male and one female athlete at the end of each athletic season. The honor is given by the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin and each of the nine schools in the league are allowed to pick their own representatives. The only requirement is that the winners must earn a varsity letter in his/her sport and have a grade point average of at least 3.50. The award is named after the late Jack Swartz, who served as the Commissioner of the CCIW until his death in 1998.
Gottardo, a mid-fielder for Head Coach
Scott Mejia's Vikings, enjoyed a tremendous sophomore season. She scored six goals and two assists on 20 shots this past fall. She was credited with 13 shots on goal and came up with a league leading three game-winning goals.
She was a second team all-conference selection in the CCIW and she was voted the Most Valuable Offensive Player by her teammates.
An elementary education major, Gottardo carries a 3.81 grade point average and she is the daughter of Frank and Michelle Gottardo of Algonquin, Illinois. She helped Augustana to a 13-3-3 overall record and a 5-1-2 mark in the CCIW, good for second place in the league standings.
Wilkerson was the unquestioned leader of the 2018 Vikings cross country team. He was the team's top finisher in all seven of the meets that Augustana competed in during the fall season.
He was 10
th in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championships in Warrenville, Illinois on October 27 and that was the second straight top-10 finish in the league for Wilkerson. He was also second at both the Western Illinois Invitational (August 31) and the Olivet Nazarene Invitational (September 28) and he took fifth at the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational (September 21) and seventh at the Luther All-American Invitational (September 8).
The son of Mark and Rhonda Wilkerson of Stelle, Illinois, Brandon was named the Most Valuable Performer for the Vikings in 2018 and he also served as team captain. He sports a 3.82 grade point average and is a math and education major. Twice he finished in the top 10 of the CCIW Championships in cross country.
During the past spring he was an All-American in track & field in the 3000 steeplechase and in 2017 he was the CCIW champion in that event.
