ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana picked up its first win of the 2018-19 collegiate wrestling season with a 27-23 decision over Simpson on Thursday, November 29 in the Carver Center. The victory was the first match of a double dual and in the nightcap the Vikings of second year head coach Tony Willaert dropped a 45-4 decision to Central Iowa.
 
Junior Adarios Jones (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) won both of his matches and ran his record to 8-0 on the season. Augustana will be in competition again on December 6 at Loras in Dubuque, Iowa.
 
In the victory over Simpson, Jones secured the win with a pin over Sam Mathis at 2:41 that erased 23-21 deficit and gave the Vikings a 27-23 win.
 
Augustana benefitted from a pair of forfeits, at 149 pounds with sophomore Daniel Terronez (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) and at 165 pounds with junior Clem Martin (Nazareth Academy, Chicago, Ill.) collecting his first ever win as a Viking.
 
Sophomore Josh Diehl (Oskaloosa HS, Oskaloosa, Iowa) romped to an 11-2 win over Jason Padilla at 133 and senior Travis Pulse (Davenport Assumption HS, Milan, Ill.) picked up a technical fall at 4:39 (18-3) of his match against Jacob Irwin at 141 pounds.
 
Simpson won three straight matches from 174 through 197 to reverse a 21-9 deficit and take a 23-21 lead heading into Jones' clincher.
 
In the loss to Central the Vikings lost nine straight weight classes, four of them by pin before Jones ended the match with a 16-3 win over Duncan Lee.
