Vikings roll past Monmouth 168-34 and set two Pepper Natatorium records in the process

Freshman Aviana Zahara won two events and set a new pool record at Monmouth
in the 100 freestyle as the Vikings moved to 4-0 on the season.

MONMOUTH, Ill. – Showing complete dominance on Friday, November 16, Augustana dominated the water in a 168-34 victory over Monmouth at Pepper Natatorium in Monmouth, Illinois. The Vikings of head coach Dan Lloyd won every event and also set a pair of pool records as they moved their dual meet record to a perfect 4-0 on the young season.
 
There were four individual double winners for Lloyd's crew and Augustana went one-two-three in six events. Freshman Lauren Raike (Alamo Heights HS, San Antonio, Texas) won the 200 freestyle in a new Pepper Natatorium record of 1:59.39 and she also took the 100 butterfly in 1:01.06. Freshman Aviana Zahara (Pleasant Valley HS, Moline, Ill.) also got in on the pool record act as she established a new mark in winning the 100 freestyle in :54.65. She also won the 50 freestyle in :25.09.
 
Junior Grace O'Shea (Sacred-Heart Griffin HS, Springfield, Ill.) handled the distance events for the Vikings as she won the 500 freestyle in 5:56.21 and the 1000 freestyle in 12:11.80. Freshman Madelynn Marunde (Belvidere North HS, Belvidere, Ill.) captured the 100 breaststroke (1:10.88) and the 200 individual medley (2:18.11). Senior Rachel Heah (Convent Green Lane HS, Penang, Malaysia) took the 100 backstroke in 1:05.65 and was second in the 500 freestyle in 6:08.96.
 
Augustana opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:57.02. Zahara led off followed by senior Mia Polinski (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.), junior Gabrielle Ainsworth (Rockton Hononegah HS, South Beloit, Ill.) and freshman Alicia Garcia (Seminole HS, Lake Mary, Fla.). Polinski placed second in the 100 butterfly (1:08.93) and 200 freestyle (2:09.02). Ainsworth was third in the 100 backstroke (1:06.99) and 100 breaststroke (1:17.56). Garcia was second in the 50 freestyle (:26.23) and third in the 100 freestyle (:56.35).
 
The Vikings closed the meet with a win in the 200 freestyle relay as Raike, junior Patti Grod (Glenbrook North HS, Northbrook, Ill.), Marunde and freshman Isabelle Seten (Centennial HS, Champaign, Ill.) recorded a time of 1:44.44. Seten picked up a pair of runner-up finishes as she was second in both the 200 freestyle (2:05.51) and the 100 freestyle (:55.87). Grod finished second in the 200 individual medley in 2:33.41.
 
Sophomore Marissa Jaskae (Waubonsie Valley HS, Aurora, Ill.) took second in the 1000 freestyle in 12:22.16 while sophomore Rebecca Schaechter (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) placed third in 12:44.65. Senior Taylor Campbell (Tuscola HS, Tuscola, Ill.) was second in the 100 backstroke (1:06.03). Senior Victoria Frank (Hinsdale South HS, Willowbrook, Ill.) finished third in both the 100 butterfly (1:12.81) and 500 freestyle (6:13.23).
 
The Vikings resume competition on Saturday, November 17 at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational in Bloomington, Illinois.
