Augustana whitewashes Carthage 9-0

Madeline Lombardi dropped just four games in winning at both singles and
doubles Saturday as Augustana downed Carthage 9-0 in Sterling, Illinois.

STERLING, Ill. – Coach Jon Miedema's Augustana women remained unbeaten this season in dual meet play, defeating Carthage 9-0 Saturday at the Westwood Tennis Club. The Vikings improved to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the CCIW, while the Lady Reds dropped to 3-2 on the year, with the same record in conference play.
 
In doubles action, seniors Caitlyn Schaffer (Kenwood Academy, Chicago, Ill.) and Madeline Lombardi (Edwardsville HS, Glen Carbon, Ill.) took care of Angelica Emmanouil and Sam Ramsey by a score of 8-1 at number one. At number two, it was sophomore Annie Timm (Prairie Ridge HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) and junior Zeana Badawi (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) besting Natalie Favia and Nia Pham 8-2. Sophomores Leraaen Abbott (Belvidere North HS, Belvider, Ill.) and Morgan Bullen (Colorado Academy, Lakewood, Colo.) completed the doubles sweep, defeating Maria Salerno and Hannah Haeberle 8-3 at number three.
 
Lombardi was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Salerno at fourth singles and Miedema got 6-3, 6-2 victories at both fifth and sixth singles. At number five, sophomore Maleeha Chowdhury (Rock Canyon HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) downed Pham and classmate Kalli Majewski (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) defeated Faelan O'Shaughnessy at sixth singles.
 
Timm won 7-5, 6-1 over Favia at second singles and Badawi was a 7-5, 6-4 winner over Ramsey at number three. After dropping her first set versus Emmanouil, Schaffer rallied to complete the whitewash with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory at number one.
 
On Sunday, October 7, Augustana is back at the Westwood Tennis Club to host Carroll in a 9:00 a.m. dual meet.
