The highlight for Coach
Kelly Bethke's outfit came in game one, as Augustana rallied from an early deficit to post a 25-23 win. A Trystam Carr service ace put Carroll on top 11-7, but a kill by senior
Emily Uglem (Moorhead HS, Moorhead, Minn.) sparked a 6-0 Viking run. A
Brooke Harmon (Lindbergh HS, St. Louis, Mo.) kill gave them their first lead at 12-11 and the margin grew to four points on two occasions before a 4-0 Pioneer spurt tied the set at 19-all. There were ties at 20, 22 and 23 as well, before a pair of kills by freshman
Sierra Erke (Quincy HS, Quincy, Ill.) closed out the game in Augustana's favor.
Two
Grace Bialobok (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Homewood, Ill.) kills capped another 6-0 Viking spree in game two that took the score from 12-9 in favor of Carroll to 15-9, Augustana. However, the Pioneers took advantage of five straight Viking attack errors to forge a 20-17 lead and the visitors couldn't recover. Set point in a 25-20 Carroll win came on an Erika Dunnam kill.
The hosts claimed the final two sets by healthy margins.
Game four went the Pioneers' way 25-16. They used a pair of 4-0 runs to jump in front 10-4 and a 5-0 Carroll spurt eventually extended the lead to 19-8. Set point came via an Augustana attack error.
The Vikings only lead in game five came at 2-1, but Dunnam had two kills as the Pioneers ran off eight straight points and 12 of 13 to go up 13-3. They pushed the lead to 18-5 and Augustana could get no closer than the final margin of 25-14. Match point came on a Karli Gierczak kill.
Uglem led the Vikings with nine kills. Freshman
Olivia Doak (Crystal Lake Central HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) had 17 assists and two service aces. Senior
Taryn VanEarwage (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) had a team-best 15 digs and shared the team lead in blocks with junior
Taylor Steger (Red Wing HS, Goodhue, Minn.). Each had two.
Kylie Mueller finished with a match-high 18 kills for Carroll.
Augustana wraps up the 2018 regular season by hosting the Pumpkin Bash on Friday, October 26 at Carver Center. The Vikings are scheduled to face Simpson at 4:00 p.m. and Illinois Tech at 8:00 p.m. The match versus IIT will also mark Senior Night for Bethke's crew.
